Kipp's Vet Visit

Just back from the vets with Kipp, it went well.

Kipp is 434g, the vet said quite solid for his size but not fat (he is a small bird).

He took some faeces to check for worms etc under the microscope after my concern about the poo sticking to his bottom a couple of times.

He felt with his background he was unlikely to have any of the more serious, contagious parrot diseases so we didn't go for the chlamydia test.

He took blood for checking the internal organ functions and for the dna sexing.

When checking his legs he felt a difference in the femurs so did an X-ray, there is an old break on the right femur making his right leg a bit shorter.

But doesn't need anything done about it as its fully stable and not affecting the joints.

The skin on the bottom of his feet isn't great, the left foot a little worse prob from putting more weight on it. Likely to fix itself with good perch variety.

The beak is fine, the 'smile' shape of the lower beak is odd but nothing actually wrong with it.

So, now I just wait for the results, hope the faecal swab is OK.

As I was getting in the car to go another car pulled in and a woman followed by a swan got out and the swan followed her into the vets - was the oddest thing! Made me laugh, don't think I could cope will cleaning up swan poop!

That great Lesley and all sounds promising, so I bet the results will come back fine.

Thanks Liz for answering Angie :)

Told he is 10 Angie, vet thought that was believable.

Forgot to say the cost was about £180.

Sounds like good news Lesley, fingers crossed the results come back ok

The swan must have been a bizarre sight :)

I forgot to mention. In Kipp's xray we could see a few bits of grit in the stomach, the vet said ideally there should be a little more.

I was surprised and said I thought greys didn't need grit. He said they don't need much but should have a bit but certainly not too much. He recommended mixing some in with cooked veggies or something about once a month.

never heard of that lesley, where would you get grit.

Karen its easy to get, some birds need it so any petshop with a decent bird section should have it :)

Its interesting though as its the first time Ive heard that a little is good for them.

that's a new one on me too lesley, see how he goes with a small amount eh? glad it all went smoothly for both of you, sure the poop tests will be clear

would loved to have seen the swan walking in the vets

So glad all went well Lesley :) can't wait for the DNA results, when will you know? Did the vet comment on whether he thought kipp was male or female? I'm sure all will be well with the other results too :)

I would of loved to have seen the swan lol I didn't know you could keep them as pets!?

No the vet didnt have an opinion about male or female- but there was a gonad in the xray- so he is def one or the other :)

The swan was bizarre. I assume they must have reared it from a baby. It was sat in her knee in the front seat- mental!

:dntknw: :dntknw: surely a gonad would be conclusive or am I being slow here :)

Well I dunno Bob, could be a language thing. He said there is a gonad - it could be a testicle or an ovary - no way of telling!

I just checked wikipedia:

'The gonad is the organ that makes gametes. The gonads in males are the testes and the gonads in females are the ovaries.'

So there!
