He is a young spectacled parrotlet about 4-5 months old, parent reared.

He is ridiculously smart and has me wrapped round his little claw.. I have taught him quite a few tricks, to the amazement of his breeder, which he learnt very quickly, although he can be stubborn on when to demonstrate them for strangers. I have recently slacked off a bit on the training and he has become incredibly cheeky, but never in a bad way.

Extremely fascinating little monster! Very loving and expressive.. looking forward to his puberty...

(The photos are a few weeks old. He now has much more blue coming through around his eyes and wings as he moults.)

As for me..

I owned a bronze-winged pionus a good few years ago (before digital pics..). Bought Charlie from a pet shop I worked at, was split rung and probably aviary bred.. but we formed a close bond and he was a joy to own, speaking a few words and rarely biting my inexperienced hands.. sadly I was a young man, the distractions of 'real life' were too many and I didn't notice his health heading downwards after 2 weeks boarding back at the pets shop while I holidayed.. long story short he ended up being put to sleep some months later. In hindsight, I can clearly see the many mistakes I made and I felt very bad for a long time about him.

I have always kept reptiles and been successful with breeding some rarer species of snake and still have my first reptile (23yr old gecko), but since my experience with Charlie I was not sure I was ready or mature enough to have another parrot in my life until recent years.. and then Archie came into my life... now I know I am in the right mindset. Really enjoy the effect he has had on my life and love the positive effects I have on his! Diet has been a real learning curve I have thoroughly enjoyed researching.

Am looking to add one slightly larger parrot to my life at somepoint and would really like that to be a Ruppell's parrot, for certain colour loving reasons, though I am aware this may be a difficult task - I have patience!

Have very much enjoyed scouring the threads for all the useful experience there appears to be on this forum and have discovered many of the answers to my questions buried in past posts.

Hope to read much more and maybe share some of my experiences in the future.

Thomas

Welcome Thomas and Archibald from Ziggy and me. What a lovely little bird you have there. This is a good place and you'll fit right in ?

He's just beautiful. I like that he has this massive birdie bread several times bigger than him and he's like "nahh!" little git

Welcome!

Hi Thomas and  :welcome: ..Archie is a fab little bird....and sounds a great character...looking forward to hearing more about his adventures.

Hi Thomas and Archie! lovely introduction and I think we can all relate to your experiences if we only new then what we did now but we do the best we can at the time, hindsight is a wonderful thing and its about learning and not repeating the same mistakes, Archie looks adorable and what a fab relationship you have built, I look forward to hearing more about him and good luck on your search for a Ruppells

Hello and welcome to you both from me and mine! Great pictures.. That birdie bread looks amazing

Now that's a cute little dude if ever i saw one   welcome to the forum little Archie

Thank you from Archie and myself for the kind welcomes.

Really enjoying researching on the site!

In my hunt for Ruppell's I have come across someone who may be H/R Bronze-wing pionus this year which has rekindled all sorts of nostalgic feelings, leading me to enquire further..!

Am in no rush, but will see what happens.. Exciting!

Are there any other Bronze-wing owners on the forum?

One more of Archie with the catch of the day..

Well caught Archie!

Roz has a blue head  pionus but haven't heard of any with a bronze wing one. :dntknw:

Very exciting

Love love love parrotlets! They are such huge characters, definitely thinking they are the size and strength of an ammie lol! We had 2 little girls and they were amazing. The pic of littlebigman Archie on the pirahna is great.

Thank you all.

He really has suprised me with the amount of personality and 'comunication' he can display.

Very intelligent and active. Learn so fast, both bad and good behaviours.. but then they are easily corrected. Really is absolutely charming!

Completely see a big parrot in him and has taught me a lot about birdie perspectives!

Glad other people on here enjoy their antics too!

Archie is so sweet, but they can nip as hard a bigger bird can't they?

I have a friend just down the road who I get a lift with to the parrot club, she has a parrotlet called Pickle. Last time I went down he was out and he sat on my hand, walked straight up my arm and bit my ear, it was still stinging an hour later

Can't believe how light they are compared to a grey :)

One of our girls, Esma, used to land on my mum's hand and run full speed up her arm and latch onto her ear too! We still find it amusing that mum was scared of two little parrotlets and yet having two huge macaws out doesn't phase her lol.

He has not bitten me that hard yet, but I am not sure what is considered hard for his size..

What he does occasionally do, if he is on my shoulder and not paying him enough attention is pinch the tiniest amount of skin on my neck.. very slowly increasing in pressure until I react. Really hurts! However he does now give me enough time to scratch him before it gets too painful.

Everything I read before aquiring him told me that they were bitey birds, but so far I have not experienced too much pain and i believe many of these birds were hand reared. I think Archie has learnt good birdie manners before leaving the flock..!

He has hung from my ear lobe on occasion in the earlier days!
