Inherited Anxious Plucked African Grey

so sorry the landlord is not approachable, you have been put in a situation and only can ask for permission to keep a bird, most tenants would not of told them. started typing when you posted I am pleased you came to a settlement and keep your grey
West were always keeping Aku! ;) we were arranging to move house.... glad we don't have to and I can now focus on family, Aku's transition and starting teacher training next week!!!

Thanks everyone!!! Xx

Yay for the good news!!! It must be a big weight off your mind that you can stay. As Oli said, Aku is very small. Ollie, my Orange-winged Amazon weighs just three grams less than she does at 372gms. He is the smallest of my Amazons.... small but perfectly formed!

Hey you lot quite with the Aku is small thing my Henni and I think SunnyRing's little sweetie are all about the same size.
It just means all the personality comes in a more compact eco bundle lol
Glad that things are playing out for you and you don't have to move can't figure out where they come up with a £30 increase through for having a parrot more than likely just an excuse to get their hands on more money … could even be the agent rather than the landlord themselves  anyways as long as it doesn't bother you that's the main :)

Teacher with an African Grey now why does that sound so familiar….. hmmm that will be because of our Brenda lets see if she's around but more than likely already buried under the school books @Bradders

The Timneh is not so popular in captivity as the Congo that most people have on this site and looking at the weight I would be concerned if your grey was a Congo, I would love to see a photo of him that also shows his tail. the Timnah is not so vibrant in the red of its tail as the Congo. and this will explain the big difference in weight. well done for keeping an eye on the birds weight

Ooh!! Would love to chat to another teacher-parrot owner! I have this crazy idea that if I can get her hand trained (please - any hints?!?!?) I could take her with me a couple of days a week to a spare cage in the staff room... so that she had some more company / interest during term-time! It's the kind of thing my grandmother would have done... she had so many stories of travelling around Africa - Nigeria / Iraq etc with an assortment of Great Danes, cats and a parrot (Old Aku... )I felt like I was channeling her when we took Aku to Nandos! Although, she would have had Old Aku under her jumper or something... that's where she used to hide!!

I think the additional money is opportunistic... and though when I hinted at paying more information was thinking £15 a month... I'll tolerate it... we could do without moving now! (My husband really wants somewhere bigger... but he is being heroic about how much staying here means to me... serious kudos to him!!! ) I know what motivates this landlord!!! We are staying here (family of 4 +Aku in a 2bed maisonette) until we can buy! (Teacher training scholarship will hopefully provide a big chunk of a deposit for us!!! :D )

Anyways... need to rearrange some furniture and convince Aku to move to her "day-cage"

Xxx

That's very interesting!!! She is being uncooperative... foraging at the bottom of her cage just now... (I have fresh food in her larger "day-cage "... but she doesn't know if plan to have her in small cage in bedroom at night and big cage in lounge during the day... and she is not a fan of being picked up yet :/ so I am struggling to get her over there.... this will be tricky from next week :/

Sorry for terrible photo!!!

What do you think ? Timneh or Congo?

to be honest if your bird is anxious, I do not recommend having young children running around, I do show some of my flock in lectures and events and many can be handled and enjoy the attention, I do not say what flock members I will take as even the most stable may not be in the correct mood on the day, I have a small display next week at a riding school, Aku looks like a Congo from its tail colour, Diet change will be concerning I would recommend hviing full bloods tested to see if he is lacking in any nutrition's and then follow veterinary advice, is his top beak slightly lighter or btownish

Strangely enough, my Ziggy, while not a Grey, is also small compared to others of her species. Also fiesty and complicated and as you know, a plucker. I wonder if there is some correlation?

She (definitely female as she has previously laid eggs) ate a diet of almost only seeds - sunflower seeds - so diet change is essential... the vet also said to get her diet changed - gradually ... once she has been on a better diet for a while, if we see little / no improvement in her feathers , we discussed a blood test....

Alas, young children running around is part of the deal as I have 2 children (6 & 8)

My thoughts re. School was staff room only and not interacting with kids... (& I'm in senior)

Where is your show?

Xx

Hello and welcome!

Teacher and grey owner here! Love the idea of Aku going to school with you and probably wiser being in the staff room. We had a house fire a few months back, all contained in our cellar so not too bad but the house did not smell too good. I took our grey, Ruby, to school with me while the house was professionally cleaned. She had a fab time, stayed with the finance manager all day, who adored her, and even had a school dinner (bowl of fruit)!

We tend to keep her routine the same whether I’m in school or on holiday. I make her plenty of foraging activities to keep her busy and she’s just happy in her own company. Evenings and weekends she sits on her tree in the living room and is happy just sitting there and watching the TV. She might fly over to us for a little attention but it’s always on her terms. She kinda does her own thing but does follow commands such as ‘step up’ which was especially handy when the smoke alarms were going off and she needed to get out of the house quick. She gets checked over by the vet every year and they are just so impressed with her. She’s almost seven now and still amazing - can’t imagine life without her!

once she is used to children running around it would not be a problem, its a local riding school I met them while I was looking for a grey that is loose in the area,

Congo greys have a back beak and timnah greys had a bone coloured beak some with wide black stripes down it
Congo lighter grey with a proper red tail
Timnah harder slate grey with a maroon tail colour

Your beautiful sweetie is defo African Grey :) used to be referred to as Congo African grey …. there used also to be references to ghana greys and lots of other places … but lets face it parrots fly in the wild … human borders mean nothing to a birdie flying … :)

Goodness - a grey living loose in the UK?!?! I was trying to figure out if you were anywhere near us so I could come see!

She has had my boys visiting several times a year for 8 years... although their noise level has obviously grown over time!!! Lol... the boys have always showered her with attention though... talking singing whistling to her... so thankfullythey will be a familiar and positive presence I think...

Brenda, I love that Ruby went to school with you! What do you teach? Having her in the main office sounds a good idea!!! Glad no one hurt in your house fire!!

I would love to teach Aku "step up".... but don't know where to begin... she is nervous of being picked up... but very affectionate once the are holding her... I think she is a relatively old girl as I'm sure my grandmother had her for around 20 years (certainly at least 15...) and she was a rescue at that point...
@Judith Boyd, you're wee girl is lovely [emoji847] I love that look in her eyes. You can tell she has a large personality.

Aww gorgeous pic!

I’m Primary and teach Year 5, last year I managed to escape Year 6 and I’m loving Year 5! Maths is my specialism and I lead it throughout school.

We’ve had Ruby since she was around 15 weeks old so training her to step up was easier because she was so young. Same with harness training. However, because we didn’t do it regularly, she point blank refuses to go in it now! Haha Took her six years to finally decide that actually being showered in the bathroom was easier for all concerned! Haha

I’m sure my class would have loved to meet Ruby but she’s not used to children, never mind a class of them. I was very wary of all the staff traipsing in to meet her but couldn’t blame them as I talk about her constantly!! Ruby took it all in her stride though and some people were even greeted with a ‘hello’. She can talk all day but rarely in front of strangers and out of her environment. She even growled at people she took an instant dislike to! Haha
