Indian Ringneck Issues? (I want to say issues)

New here, but hey seemed like a good place for these questions.

I have a beautiful Olive Green IRN called it Vert. According to the breeder when I got him/her (I don't know the gender even) it was only 13 weeks old and this was back in March and stated it was tame, which it is was a little. But now after a couple of months it won't even come out of its cage and when I get close it just flies to the opposite side of the cage even though I've not changed my approach to Vert but its oppinion to me has seemed to do a 360 and that's kinda worrying.

Though I have never managed to get the bird to take apple or any treats from my hand and right now its all fluffed up and shaking a little. Any advice on this. Added is a picture what its like right now.DSC_0061.JPG

I've looked after a Greater Crested cockatoo's and cockatiels before so I kind of know how to handle birds.

:welcome: I guess a lot of time & patience is going ot be needed. We have had several memebers who have recently got IRNs and other birds and I hope they willbe along with advice. In the meantime have a look under the Behaviours/Training thread.

Hello and welcome, how I love IRN's, Ok so he/she was friendly but now showing signs of mistrusting you, this can happen if you inadvertently frightened Vert. its more important not to lose the trust you have gained in building up the trust you have. you may of given Vert too much attention too soon , its easily done, before breakfast if possible open the cage and see if your bird will come out. if he/she dose then its a good time to clean the cage and replenish its food and water. Just carry on as you would do with out him/her being there. find a book to read and take a seat reading it out aloud, change every occurrence of an A or The to Vert giving your bird a quick glance. Never chase your bird, never enter its cage while your bird is in it, the more you relax the more and sooner your bird will. always allow time so you do not have to chase your bird back to the cage as it will go back in when it is hungry. try doing this for the next week and let us know how Vert is getting on. do keep lower than your bird, always make noise before entering the room or turning lights on, always move slowly when near or approaching your bird. I open the top of the cage at around 11am (just before midday) every day its cage is in the say room as I am commonly (with my computer so my office area) and right now its not comming out at all so if I was to take:

never enter its cage while your bird is in it

At face value I can't feed the bird...thing is I only left to do the shopping (cuz weekly shops are still needed dispite the lock down) and now it seems to mistrust me to the point it won't leave the cage, also I don't know if this has any baring at all but it seems to like music and brighter colours to what I've found out playing games and job hunting and its wings ARE clipped though I didn't clip them when I got Vert they were clipped already. Just the sudden shift in personality has me really worried.

I can see by the photo that the way your birds wings had been clipped is not good, Vert has had a traumatic experience and its up to you to slowly help you bird to gain trust in humans. ok try to make the out side of the cage as good as the inside, toys and things to do on the out side. try apple and grapes as treats.

Thanks, I'm going to need a lot of help with this guy then...The cockatoo I reference was a friend of mine's and literally only let 2 humans go around with it, the owner and me.

If you don't mind me asking, how can you tell that its wings have been badly clipped as I personally have never really seen a bird with its wings clipped before as I do prefer them being 'normal' urmm...you get what I mean anywho I don't know if it like grapes or not apple on the other hand, can't leave an apple near its cage.

But as you can see from my pfp when it does come out its fine (the blinds there are down because at the time of THAT photo there was an open window cuz it was hot and there is a window there)

the way your bird is sitting and the length of the feathers on its wings that are left. I just hope when your bird has its next moullt and if the feathers are replaced, you will let the bird fly again. this is a rotten thing some people do as the bird will appear tame but the reality is it has no place to escape too. I posted a short Video just playing with my Ringnecks on Tuesday you should watch what mine are like and see how wonderful they are in flight,

If I knew they were clipped badly I wouldn't have got it (sorry about calling Vert an it but I have no clue as to the gender) I don't want to support cruel practices after all. I mean doesn't stop me loving the bird to bits minds you and mind linking me to the video. Also yeah it will let it fly around the room its mostly parrot proof.

there is not much you can do about the clipping, but hopefully new feathers will come through . the problem with training a bird that is clipped is that birds that cannot fly away from your approach will most likely seem closer because they do not have a choice but to get the best relationship with these spectacular birds, you have to let the bird want to come to you, it a matter more of tempting the bird to come closer with out pushing it closer

In otherwords right now, instead of building trust, it would probally scare it more right now to do too much till the feathers grow back right?

No, you must still work on building trust. you just have to watch your bird carefully and try not to put it out side its comfort zone. these birds are flock birds so if you do not take interest in your bird it will get lonely and unhappy. its a fine line I know, but out of my large flock the ringneck is my favorite of all the parrot family. if you type National Geographic in the Search, tick the box for title and press on the link to the National geographic in the thread Dizzyblue started you will see me with my ringneck Beryl and a white ringneck called Jeff

Sorry just finished reading it, I think I know who to come to if I have some issues with Vert, so whats the best way to build trust considering it won't go near my hand.

You can't see it off to the side of the cage but there are these (miss) stacked CD holders and working on a kind of perch that goes from one side of hte room to the other

I have always found that if the bird was not hand reared then a ringneck need to fill safe in the home first. then they will slowly get to trust you and then see you as part of its flock.

Well I hope I can give it a better life than with the breeder it was with because Vert is a beautiful bird and I can see why you like IRN's so much I mean just the little bit of behaviour it does show has been fun to watch. Also no idea why and I've never seen a parrot use them but Vert loves the swing in its cage, sleeping on it and when the top is down (when I have to leave the room to make dinner or go shopping) Vert will sit on the swing till I get back.
