So is there anybody who's into lepidopterology or perhaps entomology?
For those preferring to call a spade a spade ... moths or insects?

I found an empty cocoon in the garden today and am trying to identify what was in it.

Am thinking moth .... for no particular reason except the size of the ruddy thing .....
Have popped a 1p piece next to it and photographed both sides of the empty casing as they are soooo very different

Hmmm wondering if its a Great Diving Beetle minus head and legs ..... but can't see anywhere for legs to have been attached?!
Besides not having any water in the garden like a pond or anything.....

Edited to add link of pictures .....

Just tried the Seek app on this weirdo item .... it comes up with two identifications .... one is a great diving beetle and the other is a winter firefly. But as the strange case has no head or legs then am not too worried about the app getting confused but as you said you found some near your pond am beginning to think great diving beetle is the best id :)
