I am a new parrot owner... I was wondering if there was anyone who lived relatively close who could come and see my bird and give me some advice on training and check out what I’m doing and how I can do it better... I want the best life for my bird and I feel this would be a good start :)

Hi Bonnie and :welcome: to the forum.
Which county do you live in and what type of parrot do you have, how old?

I love in England, West Midlands...
jenday conure, he’s only a baby. Born in November I’m told...
I’d just love a nearby fellow parrot owner that can visit and keep my on track lol

you are too far for me to help but I have found that clicker training is a good way to teach them, I used this method to keep the attention while I was harness training the one I was looking after, they seam to like the noise and giving a small seed treat it worked wonders

:welcome: I guess you need lots of time and patience as your jenday is very young.
We are spread far & wide in the UK maybe any member who lives your way will come on here and perhaps be able to visit.
But any questions ask away & we always try our best to help & advise.

I’ve got a clicker, going to look into how to implement it properly...
What sort of seeds can I use as treats that aren’t already fed in his bowl? Lol
Do you reckon he’s too young to poop train him? Or too young for any training? Or is this the perfect time..?

It’s a good time to start training, but keep the sessions short, about 10 minutes to start with, but you can do more than one session a day. It’s short so that you try to keep the birds attention and finish the session when things are going right.

You’ll see four pinned posts by Roz, these talk through the basics of gaining trust and the step up.

We don’t usually recommend poop training as such, I.e. making your parrot poop on a command, because this can cause issues if they don’t “go” naturally, because they are waiting for a command in order to do so. If you watch the body language and the time, you’ll start to recognise when Birdie is about to go, and you can return them to their cage, stand or over newspaper, to do it.

That video is simple and easy... I need to find a treat. He’s only interested in apple and is not taking to other foods, I might pop to see what seed treats the pet shops have over the weekend...

I do not believe in Poop training I had done this once and never again to any of my birds. if you do not want him to poop on you all you do is keep an eye on him and if he starts to crouch then quickly take him to a place that you will accept him to go, or if he dose poop, take him to the place you wish him to go (not in the cage) and leave him there for a short while but not too long. the reason that I do not believe you should put him back in the cage is I do not want to see that your bird looks at the cage as a place of punishment. trying to get a bird to go in one place or on one type of surface can lead to your bird making itself ill as it try's to hole it .

Seed treats are also a simple thing to find out, all you do is observe what food your bird picks from his food bowl first and just keep some aside so you can use them in training

This is me training Missy which I do daily. Just a few minutes, no more than 5 minutes. Start off with just the target stick and touching it (no more than a minute to start with) and slowly build up over time to a maximum of 5 minutes.

It's little baby steps and a lot of patience. Teach one trick at a time and move onto a new trick once the bird has mastered the first one.

For rewards, it can be anything from a rub on the head to some food. I usually use sunflower seeds which are removed from her normal food. Don't remove all the sunflower seeds from the feed, but enough to reduce the amount in the feed.

I finish the training on a high, so the last bit of training is rewarded with a big reward, Missy usually gets a small piece of Organix Mini Gingerbread Man to finish on

If giving biscuit as a reward, do check that the ingredients do not contain sugar, salt and high fat contents, and always give in small quantities.

I did the target stick trick! He’s learning :) I was a little down hearted and lost when he just kept walking around it, but I clicked when he accidentally touched it a few times, and then he got annoyed with the stick and bit it, so I clicked... and now he moves to the stick to get some apple... i’m So proud of myself!!! I can do this!!! Lol
Thank you for all your advice, I do take all of it on board and I’m implementing it as best I can... still working on a foraging tree... I would collect the branches myself but I have no clue about trees, so my friends husband is gathering some for me... but fingers crossed! Thank you guys! :)

I’ll get a video when I do it next, he’s tired out and resting on me now though lol!

:applaudit: Well done, Bonnie!!! Yes, you CAN do this!!! That's great he will work for apple. See if you can find other treats he will work for too, so that you can swap them about. Notice what he goes for in his food bowl first - these items will be his favourite. Try putting in some pieces of tree nut with his seed/pellets to see if he likes them... eg, walnut, pecan, almond. Here Kobe loves almond pieces and the Amazons will work for pieces of cashew. Pine nuts are another you could test him with and as Roy said, sunflower... or even safflower. Looking forward to seeing the video!
