How To Sprout - Step By Step Guide

red corn would figure as he only eats sprouted popcorn, maybe that's why he eats them.

thank you, i'll try to get some red corn to see if he eats that as well.

but I assume nutrition wise both the same ?

Ahoy @Roz . So I bought a specialised sprouting jar from Amazon and a big bag of sprouting seed and rice mix from Northern parrots. I put an inch of mix into the bowl and filled water to about 4 inches after a good rinsing. I then rinsed this out thoroughly after 12 hours and left it to stand tilted on a window sill.

After rinse and repeat (pun intended) for 4-5 days the mix had swelled up 4 times or so but had started to stink bad. There was zero sprouting going on. So I threw it on what passes for my lawn and even the chickens took one sniff and refused to try them.

I can’t see what I’m doing wrong. One possibility could be the extreme heat over the last week.... any thoughts?

Roz is better at this than me but I’ve found I getting better sprouting results if I soak for 22/24 hrs.

and yes I haven’t sprouted for a few weeks as I was seeing/smelling funkiness in mine, I assume due to heat.

I tend to buy human grade dried veg, only problem I find is the variety is limited unless you buy tons of the stuff to mix yourself.

I havent had any issues with mine. I dont use a jar though. I just soak the mix, 1 part mix to 5 parts water, overnight then put in a seive and rinse regularly. Usually starts to germinate in a day or 2 and ive never had it go off this far even in the heat

I’ll try a longer soak next time. the heat has finally dropped today so fingers crossed though I wouldnt have thought that heat would affect the process much.

I'd try a simpler mix to start off - like sunflower, hemp or safflower seeds. I've found some of the commercial mixes to be a bit dodgy to be honest.

yes as above, ive had to go more basic and choose as they sprout as such different times, so you end up with half a tree from one thing and another not sprouting yet.

Do you rinse often throughout the day?

Thats the one that I use a lot of the time and never had any issues with it thus far 😊

I'd put in as much water as you can for the initial soaking (was the mix still in plenty of water after the soaking?).

I soak from 6 (bit short but sometimes I forget!) - 10 hours. Corn I'll soak for 24 hours.

Sprouting (rinsing twice a day) for 4 - 5 days is quite a long time - mine are ready in about 2 days in the summer which makes me wonder if the mix was old and therefore not sprouting? It was a proper sprouting mix? ie. with nothing like split peas/lentils etc that cannot sprout and therefore will turn the rest mouldy?

Air is just as important as water - was there enough space in the jar for the sprouts to breathe or were they filling the jar completely by the end?

Window sill - if they are in full sun, they will die from the heat and humidity if the jar is very full... ie. limited air.

It has been 32C/90F+ here for the last few days and I've had no problems with my sprouts. They are sprouting faster so to slow them down I had to put them in the fridge overnight.

Can we see a pic of the mix, please?

Sprouts have to be absolutely fresh to be viable ie. to sprout. I prefer to make up my own human grade organic mixes.

I’m pretty sure this is what I bought. I decanted the remainder into 2 x i litre jars - I’ll go do a quick video of what i have and what I’m doing 2nd time round in a moment. Saves typing

One would assume a ready made specialist bag from NP would be perfect , but its possible I got a naff batch - I could try a wholefoods alternative

I have one similar to this an you just soak it over night and you can use in the morning swells really fast

Zoe is right - this is a soaking mix, not a sprouting mix. It won't sprout because it contains split peas and split lentils which will turn the rest of the ingredients to a slimy, smelly mush as you discovered. It is meant to be soaked overnight and fed the next day.

Well I finally got round to a “quick” video, was a pain to uload, would have been much quicker typing, I’ve read what you said above. The rice etc wont sprout but spoiler alert , some are sprouting. But if a “Soak” mix is not what I need I’ll have to go the whole-foods route.

So I read the instructions:

Preparation Guide
Soak for 12 hours in boiled water.
After soaking rinse thoroughly.
You can feed raw or soften further by boiling in a pan or microwave.
Rinse under cold water and leave to cool, then feed”

So it seems I could have just fed this mix yesterday , I’ll give them a good rinse and offer them up to the guys. I’ll order up some proper sprouting ingredients as @Roz recommends in OP.

One of the sprouting mixes i use the one you have would only soak over night an then feed i use the same one an your right swells really fast smaller portions needed as you can give that in the morning if you soak over night.
