How Have You Parrot Proofed Your Home?

Having just had to add vet wrap and newspaper to deter Kobe and Bobbie from biting great chunks out of Chico's platform....

.... it got me wondering what sort of alterations everyone else has made to their homes either to protect their parrot(s) or to protect their home.

Here are some of mine:

Furry draft excluders to block the gap at the bottom of the sofa so Bobbie can't try to squeeze under there any longer. There are no cushions on said sofa because Bobbie tries to nest behind them. The sofa is also covered in a throw to protect it, as well as tea towels along the back and arms.

My bookcase is covered in a towel to stop Kobe from destroying my books...

The top of the shelving unit in the kitchen is also covered with a towel to deter Kobe from chewing the top...

A sheet of perspex (cut to size) covers the top of the fridge to stop Kobe from chewing the gasket/seal (there is not much of it left!). There's a tea towel over the top just because...

I made flyscreens for the upstairs windows...

And flyscreens for the French windows of the conservatory...

And a towel to protect the conservatory door from Bobbie..

There's a towel over my coat stand:

And I made cages out of chicken wire for the uplighters in my old house.

How have you protected your parrots or home?

I tape cardboard to the top of my TV to stop them pooping down the back and inside the TV, they shred the cardboard and then it needs replaced again.

I dangle measuring tape on shelves and things to stop the birds from going there (they seem to be frightened of them)

Top of wardrobe and drawers has fleece on to stop them from chipping the paint off, it hasnt worked and my new furniture has chips out of it already

Try to cover as much wood as possible and that includes walls, Locks on cupboard's, cover over wall lights and Power turned off, in most bird accessible areas, turn all power off except the fridge and freezer and alarm and camera recorders and my bedroom and out side lights when I go out. done away with TV and most furniture,

Yes when it’s Chiko playtime, we have an array of towels and tea towelscovering up shelves, Tv, cushions, etc...Bin bags cabled tied to the ceiling pendant light fittings. Egg boxes along the curtain tracks, although his getting less fearful of them now. You have to have eyes in the back of your head, as pinching human belongings is much more fun than the huge array of parrot toys....the other day he spied a small USB stick on the coffee table and was off over there and grabbed it and ran off with it in a second or two.

Hahahaha - that's a good idea with the cardboard... although not so good that it's a shredding toy too! :pancarta:
That's funny, measuring tapes are something to be feared here too!

Sounds like a huge daily mission!! :pancarta: Can identify with you re getting rid of furniture. Once upon a time, long, long ago I had two settees, an arm chair and a huge beautiful rug. Now I just have the one settee with holes.

And I thought Michael's bird proofing was bad enough!!! :risas3: Have you tried Heather's idea of measuring tapes? :pancarta:

I basically gave up buying things I would care about and live with second hand furniture etc throws on everything possible so it can be washed and easily removes any dust or poop by just throwing them into the washer.
I don't have visitors so its not a real issue when it comes to people judging the way I live in a none coordinated colour and style hotch potch
Items that have any sentimental value are locked away for years on end without viewing daylight anymore as its easier for me
Mirrors have stickers on them of cartoon birds in case my birds decide to try and fly into the imaginary room in the mirror.
Dining room doesn't exist any more its their sleep room … got rid of the furniture in there birds needed the room more than I needed a place to sit down and eat.
Living room has tree branches and java tree in it so they can come sit where I sit …. aquariums have fleece covers that go over them to try and limit the amount of noise transmitted into the tanks by birds yelling hello and tapping on the glass!
All books have gone to live in my bedroom as its safer for them … beaks here think everything is for shredding.

I will say that the damage caused by Rats attempting to get in cost me more monies in repairs and safe guards to keep them out than the damage caused by the birds over the last few years, its an ongoing problem, that has affected most of the properties on the farm, Last year was the worst so far as they have even attempted to get in by window frames and chewed holes in ceilings. one of the barns that has been converted had so much damage over the last six months that they had to have a wall completely replaced inside and out and they have a cat and dog. I know the stables and the river dose not help but it was one of the worst years that the farm has had, I have had to replace wiring and fill in holes even at my landlords and they have no animals. they even chewed though there toilet waste pipe and another water pipe that caused bad leeks and I had the same problems . My parrots are angels compared to the rats.

We had a rat problem in the UK when a lady a few doors away moved out (she had several dogs and left food waste around). We all had problems and our neighbour lives in a wooden bungalow and had them eating their way through his house, we had to keep the shed checked and be very careful not to spill chicken feed.

I have been lucky this year compared to others on the farm, the big attraction I think is the stables as it gives them warm bedding and a cosy place to bring up there young.

LOL, another parrot person who has got rid of their furniture!! My living room also has a java tree and other stands so we can all sit together. That's a good idea with the fleece for the aquariums.... never thought about the noise for the fish! You reminded me with the stickers on your mirrors, I still have to put stickers/decals on my French windows. Brought a packet of them over with me nearly 4 years ago now!

That's awful about the rats, Michael. Sadly I have had to stop feeding the outdoor birds on the ground as my neighbour told me she saw 6 of them on the lawn the other day! I can't bear to poison them. They come in from the field next door methinks.

I miss having the feeders in the garden as well but I had to stop feeding the wild birds as rats got attracted to them. I have made friends with a crow whom often comes into the garden to watch me as I clean the cages, this morning it brought me a present (I only wished it did not) a young baby dead bird and put it by my foot,:yikes:
