Hello all! So its been 20 years since I last had an African grey and I have been looking to get one in the next year. Im in the UK and it seems there have been so many changes since I last owned one though and im feeling a little overwhelmed ! From experience I know the general basic care etc.
I was hoping to hatch and hand rear one myself but I cant find the correct information online about it . I see its illigal without paperwork and I wouldn't know how to get the paperwork and ID rings etc. Could someone please clarify this for me so I can stop dreaming and put the incubator away haha !

You wouldn't be able to hatch a chick and raise it. Selling eggs is illegal or getting a bird that's not finished weaning is also illegal. You would have to find a reputable breeder and get a bird once it's ready with its paper work etc. Or you can visit some of the UK charities and home a bird from there. I think that information is correct @dianaT @DizzyBlue

Hi,I'm new here but would like to add my experience. Ive found that birds that are parent reared and then tamed are far more adjusted and less likely to develop problems like plucking than those that are hand reared. I have seen so many hand reared rescues that have many issues it's heart breaking. Please also remember you might think having a grey from a baby means they will bond with you and won't bite, etc, it's not always the case. I have seen rescues come from various places and can be the sweetest things so always think about this too as giving a home to a rescue can be very very rewarding :)

Couldn't agree more with the post above. My happiest and most well-behaved grey by far was parent-reared and remained with his mum and dad for one full year. He became completely tame within weeks of me purchasing him (although every parrot has its own pace)....
