Hi thanks for the join. My name is Sully and our birds name Is Diane I’m told she is a she anyway. She is 17 months old and we have had her a month now. ( her previous owner is moving back to France. ) I have lots of questions and have a lot to learn so please bear with me. I think we are doing ok and Diane has fitted in really quick. My main concern is diet, as no telling what it was before. We received some pellets from previous owner but she very rarely eat them and throws them out most of the time. She’s really not a prolific eater but seems to love pomegranate, sunflower seeds and almonds. We know this is not ideal and want to give her a more nutritious diet, is it just a case of offering and hopefully she will change her mind ? We don’t want to remove food to make her so hungry she will try anything. Like I said we have a lot to learn

Hi and welcome, pomegranate is ok but the sunflower seeds are very fatty and should be kept for training treats. Chop is what a lot of us use which is basically chopped up veg that we put in fridge or freeze in daily amounts. There is a section on the forum about safe foods. You wanna pack that bird with as much veg as you can it will help it's development and health as she grows. Good quality Pellets are ok.

:welcome: Sully and Diane. First time I've come across with the name similar to mine!
Many of of members keep Greys and I am sure they will be along with advice as had @Yellowchickenparrot .
A variety of fresh fruits & veg is always good and trial and error as to what they will eat, but never give up.
Some folks offer the pellets others a good quality seed mix, my flock have Tidymix parrot mix which they enjoy.
Do ask away there is usually someone around to advise.

Hi and welcome. Here is the section re feeding your parrot, please have a good nosey through here. Any questions after please shout!

The main two pellet providers are TOPs and Harrison's and this is because they are organic. Mine eat Harrison's. Sprouting is good also and Roz's instructions in the above section are great! As with us it is important to Feed the Rainbow. If you make a chop I add apple to mine to help sweeten it. :)

PS I only give my 'too's seed at bedtime and have now changed to Neophema for the pink ones as mainly grass seeds.

:welcome: from us and our flock! Diane is beautiful! Good advice already given, just to add our thoughts though, ours have a dry foraging breakfast of Harrisons High Potency pellets, some Harrison's Power Treats, and some pine nuts. Their tea is usually veg chop with added HP pellets. Through the day they may have fruit treats and nuts in shell.

Hello and welcome 🙂
Diane is lovely! I also have a grey who has just turned 16 months old and we have had him since 5 months. He came to us eating seeds and we changed his diet gradually but started the first day.

Bo my grey, is on Harrison’s high potency pellets and he has these on a morning. He also has a massive selection of veg and some fruit. He picks and chooses if he wants his veg cooked so more often than not his veggies are steamed and he loves them. On an evening i give him a bit of seed but it’s a mix without nuts and sunflower seeds, he doesn’t have loads but he does have this on a teatime/early evening.
It took a while to get him used to veggies and fruit but he loves breakfast now and will say to me ‘come on, go back breakfast’ haha!

Thanks for the advice. I will add though we don’t give her just sunflower seeds there in a parrot mix we had to buy the first day she arrived and she seems to want to just pick them out.

Hi as stated before I’m trying to change Diane’s diet. I though I’d better have a starting point so weighed her today and found she came in at 455g. According to Google this is above average. Could this be why I’m having trouble getting her to try anything new and healthy. ?

Well they all do vary in weight, I would guess too many sunflower seeds . Best to ease her off them gradually.

:welcome: Sully and Diane! Keep offering fresh fruit and veg to the things she already eats - try cutting them up in different ways - small pieces, large pieces, cubes, batons, triangles etc. Try the chop mentioned. You can also string large pieces of fruit and veg on a stainless steel kabob skewer and make a toy out of them. Gradually she will start trying them. Steamed veggies are sometimes more popular than raw.

If she likes sunflower seeds, try sprouting them which will make them a lot more nutritious. Then put them on top of other foods you want her to try. Kobe my Pionus liked peas so I used to squash them onto other foods I wanted him to try like scrambled egg or mashed sweet potato etc.

Try slotting in the fresh bowl first thing to encourage her to try the contents when she is hungry. Then slot in the dry bowl half an hour later.

When Dusky CAG came to me he was on approx. 70% sunflower seed diet. 5 years later he is not touching them, always remain in his bowls, I would like him to eat a couple but "No thank you" he says. Must admit I did not exclude them but from the very beginning he was on a sensible diet

That's basically what mine get, but they also have soaked and sprouted seeds, which are so much better than dry ones. Sunflower seeds are suitable in this format! Also, you could try organic palm oil on toast, which they simply love and gives them the oils and vitamin A they need.

Ooo this palm oil on toast sounds good! Bo is always after my toast at least this way he can eat something good for him at the same time as me!

I have to say my lot did not like palm oil , don't blame them either I tasted it and didn't either. So every morning for years & years they have had a soldier of wholemeal toat with local honey on, only a smidgen.
