Hi my name is Karen and I have a cream pied kakariki called sprocket.

:welcome: from me too. Sprocket is gorgeous! It sounds like you have made a lot of progress with him in a short time.

Thank you. Any progress that we have made is really due to him being such a special little chap.

He is lovely, well done for giving him a good home. We have Buddy our Kak and he is fabulous, although going through the dreaded hormones at the moment. Such active and entertaining birds, Buddy loves nothing better than a good forage and a daily bath. Enjoy him x

Thank you he is a real sweetie. Sprocket loves foraging too. Have you found any parrot mix that suits him I find that the mixes with dried sweetcorn are rock hard and the peanuts are too big for him. I have found one brand which he likes but it has big flat white nuts in which he doesn't like.
He loves playing with and eating dried chillies and sunflower seeds

Hi Karen, Buddy mainly has fresh veg with a small amount of fruit, but I do give him a little pot of seeds as well. I use peanut and sunflower seed free tidymix mixed with a few pellets, it does have the dried sweetcorn in it but he just throws the bits he doesn't like out. I reserve sunflower seeds for treats and training (bribes in reality!!), as they are very fatty. I also give sprouted seeds (see the threads on here for instructions), which he loves. Chillies either dried or fresh are a big favourite x

Hi Lorna I have gradually been intruducing fresh food as the people I got him from said he just ate seed🙄 he likes the sugar snap peas and loves broccoli. I have introduced grated carrot sweetcorn (fresh) spinach and dandelion leaves. All in very small amounts. He seems to enjoy them all but apple and broccoli are definately favourites. I will try sprouting but have not done this before and am a bit scared of getting beans that have been treated in some way and poisoning him. I would think if I get organic ones they should be okay but I am still unsure about this just yet. If anything I am probably giving him a bit too much parrot mix but he is so active and was definately underweight when I got him so he needed to put on a little bit. I won't let him get overweight though.

Hi everyone just a quick update on Sprocket. He has had his first trip outdoors into the garden. I put his cage under the apple tree in the shade and cool and sat with him for about two hours. He was very quiet at first but soon relaxed and started playing and bouncing round the cage. He loved it and I am hoping the fresh air and a bit of sun will do him some good. Now contemplating building a small aviary so he can fly around outside during the summer.
His tail is still atrocious though. He only has 2 feathers and one of those is just the shaft. I am hoping he grows a new one soon. I think its a legacy from his time in the cage. Any tips on tail care would be much appreciated. Oh and he likes a bit of rice with a few meal worms sprinkled on top as a treat.
Anyway best be off he is destroying something behind the television
X k
