Help my female cockatiel is plucking her feathers out from under her wings.

As others have said, leave the eggs in the nest until either your hen rejects them or they break. If there is any chance of them being fertile and you don't want to let them hatch, then either switch them for some Dummy eggs (and destroy the eggs before they develop) , I got a whole set off eBay for under £5 or you could carefully blow out the yokes by making a small hole in each end and then blowing out the contents and then replacing the eggs back into the nest.

You say that your hen is plucking around the vent? Birds usually pluck around the belly area, this is normal, this is so that she can then place her warm skin against the eggs to help keep the eggs warm when sitting on her eggs. It would be harder to keep the eggs warm if she didn't pluck her feathers out around the area where she will be making contact with the eggs as the feathers would provide insulation, therefore preventing the heat of the bird body from getting to the eggs.

If you have any concerns, please consult an avian vets and get some professional advice.
Thanks for your input. The problem being my avian vet wants to anaesthetise barney for bloods. I do not agree with this and don’t drive. There is only one in this area. That’s why I’m going down the road of me taking s sample as explained to me by michael Reynolds and sending it to a lab.

Hi
you can just take the results to your vet, from the results your vet will supply medication or advice on diet if needed.
hi. I have phoned animalgenetics re taking a sample from Barney and they said I need to ask for a specific test , Giardia etc. They don’t do an all round test. What did you ask for when you had your bird tested please. Thanks

If your bird is plucking I would do pbfd, psittacosis, polyoma and giardia to start with and go from there.
You could also double check with your vet if there are any others you should test for as it tends to be cheaper doing multiple tests on one sample.

yes avian biotech is whom I use, so pleased she has stopped plucking herself. the other method they may be able to use is by plucking a feather, ok doing what ever test they recommend it pays to make sure all is cleaned, you wear surgical gloves and a mask to stop contamination of the samples. if you are near the Kent area I do not mind taking the samples from your bird for you
Hi michael. Just to give you an update on Barney. I have changed vets. Took her to an amazing vet in Andover who specialises and has a cockatiel herself. She was not doing well. She put her 2 different meds for the min and took bloods etc today without anaesthetic. I am having to feed her with a syringe as she is underweight. She is seeming a lot better tonight. Time will tell. Just have to wait for the results of all the tests now. Fingers crossed for my little darling. 😍

I am hoping that she will improve and I am pleased you found a better avian vet. was you present when the bloods were taken?

No I wasn’t present, she showed me the file and all the other tests that were being sent off. She was so good. Spent an hour with me going over everything and explaining it all. Very caring and thorough. Much better than my previous vet who did not seem interested.

How is Barney doing?
Thankyou for asking. She is better. Since yesterday she has been eating well. No further feather plucking. Her tests for Giardia etc all came back negative. I am going to talk to the vet tomorrow about it all. I will let you know what she said as she has been off a few days and I just got the results of another vet at that surgery. I’m soooo pleased she is her old self again. It’s been 5 weeks of strain worrying about her and giving her meds and top up feed. She had been really poorly. Thanks again I have really appreciated your advise. 🐦🐦🐦
