New to all this. Probably wont talk much.hoping to absorb what I can. Been wanting a parrot for ages and prolly getting a macaw bird soon

Hello and welcome, we are always willing to answer questions, there are a few macaw owners on this site, have you thought of what species of macaw you are wanting?

:welcome: from me too. Just ask away usually someone around to help best we can.

Hello and welcome from me and Dora. Great that you are reading up before taking the plunge - so much to learn and you'll find a lot of info here, plus ask away and people will try to help.

Not sure, a friend is going abroad when the covid thing is over and he is selling me one cheap, he has a blue one and a red one. We don’t live close so I havent spent much time with them but they are both lovely

You'd best ask him what species of macaw they are as your going to have to ensure you have the amount of room available for the species some are larger than others
Blue makes me think blue and gold macaw and red makes me thing scarlet macaw and your definitely going to have to visit them to ensure that you and the bird actually do get along.

I’ll get some pics the blue one has a yellow chest, theyre both very big. He did tell me what they are. I’ll ask him when we talk at some point

:welcome: Splinter! Yes, the blue one sounds like a Blue & Gold. :macaw_head: Have you thought of what cage you are going to get? A good cage can be more expensive than the bird! Looking forward to following your parroty journey! :D

Hi and welcome. It's lovely that you want a parrot, but just be sure you are aware what you are getting into. Especially with something like a macaw. Any parrot it an important decision, but larger species come with much larger space requirements. You're basically adopting a toddler that can destroy your house, injure you pretty badly if not understood, and needs a LOT of attention. You would ideally need to get to know the birds first as they can be very particular with who they like and don't like. You said that your friend had 2 macaws, have they been together long? are they a bonded pair? To separate them just because you only want one would be cruel to be honest. These guys live 60+ years (we know one who is over 90), so you need to realise the life commitment you would be making. Sorry to sound pessimistic, but there are way too many people who get these sorts of birds because they seem nice, and they end up leaving them shut in a cage or abandon them when they realise that their life will never be the same again. I'm definitely not saying you're one of those people, I just want to make sure you're aware that with these beautiful birds come high bills, less social freedom a lot of the time, and an awful lot of responsibility. Best of luck, and despite how all of the above must sound, I DO warmly welcome you to the forum!

Well thanks for your replies. They are apparently blue and gold, and red winged. Unfortunately the deal has fallen through. My friend has given up on his promotion overseas and he wanted 2k each and for them to be kept together. I cannot afford or accommodate both. I’ve done a ton of research and although I think I would be a good Mac owner its a huge expensive ting to undertake at the moment with all the uncertainty. From what I can gather my best start would be getting an indian redneck. Incidentally i’ve joined some facebook macaw clubs and 99% of the posts are from new people with 3 month old RW MAcs, people who have never even owned a bird before - who are suffering problems. Meanwhile the prices are skyrocketting. I may not be a bird owner but I am an economist. I see, in a years time a massive amount of abandoned pets. And not just the Xmas puppy type. I think I will settle for some IRN for now and wait until I have some experience. I don’t want to be one of those d*** heads

@MJGB - MikeJenGaryBeckyBoo tyvm your comments forced me to reconcile
You've done really well to consider all your research and put the birds ultimate wellbeing first. It sounds like you would make a good home for a smaller parrot, and you are well aware that they all need a good loving home regardless of their size. If you do decide to get an IRN we look forward to seeing photos and sharing your adventures! :D We've got some IRN owners on here who would surely love to offer any support with any questions you may have!

Please dont "settle" for anything as you said. Its still a big commitment and whether its a macaw or a ringneck it will be with you for a considerable amount of time. Nice to hear youve done your research though and hopefully you find the right fit for you and your lifestyle. 😁

Hope you get your splinter sorted too! :risas3: :nut: interesting username 😁
