Hello Newbie Here Wanting Some Advice.

My Waggle Waggle lived safely with my cat population for 17 years. He outlived a lot--- saw some come and some go--  the population varied from 6-12 in his time here. I have 7 at the moment, and 3 dogs, and Koko is in absolutely no danger from them either. I take the usual precautions, and would never take risks, but cats tend to know the difference between "family" and "fair game."

I do not have any other animals in my home apart from birds but if given the correct safety and supervision their is no reason why you cannot keep a lion  in the house with birds.  I have lost a bird owing to a rat getting in my home but given common sense and not putting the bird in danger through being exposed to cats or dogs ect. we have ten cats on the farm and one dog none are allowed in my home.  I am sorry John Malone I did find your reply a little abrupt but to the point and under stand your view but personally I wish you could choose the way you put things over would be in a more friendly way.  People come to this site for advice and I like to guide them with the birds safety in mind To say "get rid of them" is not thinking of the love and bond that they have for the cats they own.  We are not hear to tell people but only for advice.  This member has shown the respect for all animals and by asking has shown responsibility.  If a administrator thinks that my response to John's wordings in his post is wrong then I would like them to delete it.  it is not often things make me angry or upset and normally I will just ignore comments made but personally if an answer was directed to myself I would of been very offended so please forgive the way I fill but I keep birds but love all animals.

Well said Michael :)

I was about to hijack this thread but will start another of my own as everyone has a right to a point of view :)

Welcome Victoria... hope you keep sharing your news when you find a new house-mate... Look at Caiques, they can be buggers but if I were to get a smaller bird that is the one for me... totally fecking adorable!!!

I will have to disagree with you on the Quaker front Michael, I have one, she is the most adorable little treasure, yes can get a little cage protective but when she's out she is the sweetest little bird, can be noisy but can't they all lol xxx

Hi Sarah I agree they can be the most adorable birds what I was trying to point out is if they are left to fly freely in a room (not caged some of the time) they can become room protective

Hi and welcome to the site, glad you are thinking through all the options before jumping in. For what it's worth I think a hand reared male cockatiel is the best family pet going imo, most learn to talk to some degree, they thrive on mimicry and are in  my experience easier to get to interact with various members of the family rather than bonding too tightly with one person. Also if it matters they are available in some really stunning mutations now.

Again Thank you'll so much, looking in to all the suggestions and I'm gonna try and get to know all the types of birds you have suggested, I think I have came to the conclusion that no matter what every birds have their faults just like every other pet and us humans, I'm not buying bird sake buying first one that comes up either as they are going to hopefully be in my life for a very longtime and don't want to settle for anything.

As for the rude comment what upset me was way he worded it! No need to be so nasty, I value anyone views and advice and hence why I came on here and started this thread and if it comes to point that no I could not offer the right home for and kind or bird/animal then I will not get one for end up being rehomed as to many people jump in getting animals and can't cope and end up getting rid.

Hi Victoria, yes perhaps John will reflect on making his views known in a less blunt way!

have fun and enjoy doing your birdie research..... And do let us know when you find "the one"..... As I'm sure you will find a feathered friend soon

OMG I love it.  Mental breakdown support group. Half dozen sad humans sitting in a circle, wearily contemplating their broken lives.

Moderator, grey middle aged woman in grey jumper and grey slacks which have seen better days ( in the 70's) says:

Would anyone else like to contribute?

Blabbermouth slowly raises her hand, group turns round encouragingly, faltering smiles offer support.

Then she says, 'My name is Blabbermouth and I have an INTOLERANT PARROT"

LOL all the way home

(Moderator - new thread? - My parrot is intolerant!)
Well as an overbonded parrot he is bloody intolerant. He does not tolerate man, beast, cushions, tables, jumpers, cuddly toys, laptops...

If your name isn't Lisa then his intolerant tail will chase you all the way out the front door and possibly even to the end of the street!

Lisa that just sounds like how my Electus Ruby was Over bonded and the boss ................ or else.  The best advice is to look at as many birds as possible and go for the one that triggers the heart the most.  all the negatives are out weighed by the positive.............  The love and bond that is built

Lisa that just sounds like how my Electus Ruby was Over bonded and the boss ................ or else.  The best advice is to look at as many birds as possible and go for the one that triggers the heart the most.  all the negatives are out weighed by the positive.............  The love and bond that is built
I totally agree Michael. He is a little green gremlin but he us my little green gremlin. For as stroppy he is to the rest of the world he is equally as loving to me.

I have read so much now and got all these birds temperaments swimming around my head but there a baby hand reared sun conure that i'm possibly thinking of going to view. baby only 5 weeks old and yet to message the person. I really want honesty of them the good the bad and the ugly if you do not mind.

I have three the bad side is they can be extremely noisy but this can be trained out of them and young birds are not normally bad.  they just love company can be taught to talk and not as nippy as other conures.  they love interaction and training and I cannot say too much about the fun and mischief they can get up too.  the love they have to give well lets say you will get plenty of cuddles.  They may like to chuck their food about and also make pea soup of the water so that needs to be changed very often young birds can get excited in play but its up to you to keep them calm and find another game to play. The Sun Conures are my favourite species but I was spoilt by my Feebee whom is still so close in my heart and thoughts.

Not sure if I dreamt this but did Lou post a video of her sun conure to show us the noise he makes? When my Alfie (male eclectus)  screeches it is loud but no one is prepared for it when they hear it- it actually hurts my brother's ears. But it is not constant and rarely happens.

You can go on youtube and there are videos titled 'How Loud is a screaming sun Conure.' It might give you an idea- it might be louder or quieter than you expect?

Hmmmm maybe not the best advice about Youtube- there are also gorgeous sun conures dancing to 'Bad to the Bone', enjoying tickles, playing with blankets and playing in the bath- just too darn cute to be objective!

Lou's bird is a Jenday conure very similar though well the Electus call is very loud but I have know extremely loud Suns as well but this is still quiet compared to  Some other parrots

Any bird can be loud, even my cockatiel can be extremely "I'm going to chuck you in the pan if you don't shut up right now" grating even though he's pretty quiet and chilled about 95% of the time.
