On Saturday we (husband, myself, stepson and our cocker spaniel Loki) rehomed a lovely older lady orange winged Amazon called Toby. We are not sure how old Toby is exactly as the couple how had her, had her for 25 years they took her in as a rescue back then. So she could be about 30!

She is a lovely sweet girl who likes to hang out on top or the cage or our heads. Happy to take food from our hands and pretty much seems settled.

We’ve never had a parrot before only ever budgies. Although I was brought up with my aunt having African Greys. So have been around larger birds. I’ve always wants and African grey or a cockatoo. But through parrot trust Scotland we found Toby and she seemed a perfect fit for us.

Any advice would be greatly welcomed as this is a whole new territory for us.

Thanks

Welcome to you both.

There’s lots of help in here, so if you have anything specific to ask…then ask. Somebody will sure to be able to help…not me though I only have little birdies.

:welcome: Arlene and the gorgeous Toby! I absolutely adore Orange-wings. I have found in general they are much more gentle than some of the others. Playful too! Can have a pretty loud voice though. 😄

The trick is to keep reading her body language and try to keep it as relaxed as possible. That way you’ll earn her trust.

Have you found out what her absolute favourite treats are? You can put a little selection of things in a bowl and see what she picks out first. As soon as you find something she loves, you can use those items to reinforce/reward behaviours you want to see more of.

Hi Roz,
Yeah she’s a total carb junkie, loves walnuts, pistachios and a little bit of a ginger nut biscuit! She begged my step son for a piece of his banana yesterday morning. Loves her fruit. Have only seen her go to her tidy mix once but again that could be to do with the fact she wasn’t sure what was going on with coming to a different house.

She has been flying around and landing on our heads apparently she prefers heads to shoulders or arms. I’m hoping I can work on that and get her down where we can see her.

She’s also allowing us to tickle her head with one of her molten feathers for now. Again I’ll build that up to my finger so there’s more trust. She’s just great! She has a game called blink where if you wink at her she does it back.

Clever little cookie!
