Hello from Malta

Hello everyone,

My name is Steve and I have been keeping various animals my whole life; professionally I work with fish cultivation.

I moved to Malta 7 years ago, and despite the stigma, it is a nation of bird lovers; I have three neighbours with large aviaries on my street alone.

So I took advantage of this and started keeping several kinds of birds, many canaries and other finches, lovebirds, and doves (which breed like crazy). I acquired a hand raised conure and I really loved him alot, but I lost him in an accident that was entirely my own fault. I was heart broken and gave away all my birds, all my cages etc, as well as my plans for an aviary. I couldn't look at a bird or contemplate keeping another.

Just under two months ago I acquired a 3 month old lovebird (for the tiny sum of 15 euros). He/she, wasn't tame at all and was very scared of me. I work mostly from home so I cant invest a lot of time in him, and I have managed to tame him up. He spends all day with me, interrupting my online meetings and watching YouTube on my phone.

I can pretty much get my hands on any kind of bird in Malta for peanuts...it's really quite something...but I am happy with my companion. I joined this forum to help me learn as much as I can about parrots...although aviculture is massively popular here, the knowledge base isn't so great.

Welcome to the forum, it's a good place to get support and advice, both from the forum discussions and from great advice to questions asked from extremely experienced people (who will no doubt chip in soon with their own hello's)😃

Welcome, members live with a variety of different parrots so ask away

Welcome to the forum from us . You're so lucky to live on Malta, such a beautiful place! We've been a few times and stay in Mellieha Bay. The only pet birds we've seen were the little ones in tiny cages hung up in trees by the horse & carriage stands in Mdina. But you can't judge a whole island on a few people!
Really sorry to hear about the huge upset with your conure. I bet there are quite a few here who can sympathise with a similar experience. :(Your little lovebird sounds like a great character, and it's great he's got you to terrorise in the day  Keep up the good work!

Thanks very much for the welcome.

MJGB - yes....people sometimes take their best singing males finches with them to work in little cages and attach them to a tree so they can listen to them sing. They don't live in this cage full time, and finches being finches, and the fact they are singing happily, they probably don't mind too much. I know Meliha well...I live in Mosta, 2 minutes from the Mosta dome.

Hello and welcome. It is heartbreaking to lose a loved companion no matter how it happens, so I'm glad that you've found yourself another now. I'm also very happy to know about the finches, as I too was under the impression that they lived in those tiny cages full time! 🙂

I have seen some people keep them full time in little cages...but they only represent themselves....most people here take good care of their birds. Malta has a bad reputation when it come to bird life, due to the BBCs negative coverage of the hunting..but the reality is somewhat more succinct....even may of the hunters are fanatic finch breeders. There are lots of racing pigeons here to, and my friend has a few golden pheasants which are nice.
