Hello,
it is quite long time I reasearch about parrots . I have experience with different animals but I decided to live with a parrot soon ( or maybe more than one) for various reasons. I am anyway still undecided on the breed and if young or older parrot.
Personally I would prefer an older parrot, without huge behaviour issues, as I do not have enough experience yet.
I am also considering adoption before buying.
The breeds I am undecided is some kind of amazon, some kind cacatua or ara macaw ( this is my favorite).
Any advise is welcome!
Thank you and nice to meet you all
Sephira

Hello and welcome, so pleased that you are asking questions first, keeping an open mind on a new or older bird is good, i do not know of charities in Italy that you can approach, but i am able to give guidance in there care and ways. personally i do not believe in starting with an easy bird to look after if you would love a Ara but i do advise learning as much as you can on the species as you can before taking a parrot in. this is where our members can help. every one has to start off without experience unless they had been brought up around parrots. having both Aa macaws and amazons living with me you can always ask,

:welcome: Sephira! Do look into rehomes - not all have behaviour issues. Also think about how much space you have for housing - the large Macaws and larger Cockatoos especially need a lot of room.

Hello, thank you very much to everybody.
I tried to contact charities in italy for parrots but they never even answer e-mails and their forums are quite dead.
For sure there are birds in need, example when the owner dies, if the relatives don't tke in the parrot. I know one that ad 3 owners grandmother, mother and my friend.
Honestly I would even prefer an older bird.
If I would need to pick it in another country I would even, there is nodifference to travel deep in south italy or to another country like germany, actually maybe going abroad it is easier.
I have the space for the ara , I can build it, but ofcourse I would prefer to keep the bird inside. For this reason I am consideting also amazon and cockatoos. There is one thing that obsesses me. i got cats and small dogs, small dogs except the pintcher they will not consider any of these birds but te cats may consider amazon or cockatoo as prey, ara doesn't have this risck, at all.I do not intend to leave the cats ever alone with the bird but in a life time you never know what can happen as I am an ex owner of czeckoslovakian wolfdog I have seen lots of accidents. Also if an ara gets lost for some reason , it has more chances to be found than a smaller parrot. Once one of my lovebirds escaped and it was a nightmere to look for him between the buildings, I was lucky he came back.
Also I would like to dedicate time to teach the parrot talking, tricks and reading. i have been said ara is not good for this but somehow i do not believe it.
Any advise is welcome. thanks again

also what is surprising me that all breeders i visited are quite rude , avoid questions, have paranoias and they kind not the kind of people i wanna be in contact for the rest of my life.
I have seen breeders of dogs and cats , i may have had a small discussion but that's it.
With parrots it is becoming a nightmere and at least in italy i understand why people buy them in shops.

I have even been told it is a huge sofference for a parrot to learn how to wear an avaiary suit if they learn after they have wings.... i have seen parrots 20 years old learning, how can it be difficult for a 4 months old parrot??
If a person wants to take the birds anywhere, bars, restaurants....beach and stuff I think it is proper the parrot also can wear an aviary suit...for safety.
Learning freeflight is not ok in certain situations. I never took risck with a big dog and I won t take it even with a parrot.Sorry but I had to add this.
Thanks again

Hi, You may like to ask vets whether they know of where you could go to offer a home to a needy parrot, I am sure they would have some idea.
Do you have animal rescues you could contact, not necessarily parrot rescues but the general dog & cats as they too may be able to help advise on where to rehome a parrot.

As you mention you are aware that you must always be careful when you have dogs and cats around they are after all predators to birds and birds will quite likely become very scared, and no matter how much you may trust your cats and dogs they should never be left alone in the same room with your parrot, a cat can narrow its paws to reach into a cage, either dog or at can knock the cage causing fright and stress to the parrot, so many things to be considered.
Even the larger specie of parrot would be at risk.

There is no guarantee that any parrot will learn to talk, to play tricks etc. some do some don't.

If and when you do get a parrot please make sure the wings have not been clipped, it is a cruel practice and birds are meant to fly.
Free flight is always a risk, but many folk do have aviator harness they get their birds used to indoors, so when they take it outside you have control so it does not fly away.

Yes, I know it is always a risck, i still see a macaw in a safer position with a cat or a pintcher than an amazon, and also outisde. Honestly I see free flight a huge risck, something to do only and only in a safe area possibly with other parrots. I never leted my wolfdog free and he wasn't the prey, I don t see the reason why I should do this with a parrot.
I may ask vets or let adds in there. rescues of dogs and cats, honestly I don't like their politics and i avoid them. I know some volunteers that save cats and dogs independetly, rarely they have birds, because I think in most cases they don't care. Like they don't care about rabbits, not their thing, but I already spreaded the word.
Even if i will need to go to a breeder i am seriously consider to go abroad, as maybe i have bad luck, maybe here parrots breeders are just like that.

Hi, I am in France and have had similar problems in that parrot specific websites both French and European don't keep their websites up to date, have little activity on them and don't answer emails. You will find a lot of really good information and friendly people here though. 😊
