Thank you for letting me joining your forum because this is the best place to start.not long ago my son past away so now I live on my own I have a waterfront apartment so coming from Bristol a sea faring bird would be appropriate so thinking of a African Grey or an Amazon parrot although my apartment is small I have the room for a large cage I’m retired so I have the time to learn from each other I’m in the process of reading every thing I can, Diet, Training, care,The only negative thing is my age I’m 70 a fit 70 I might add but seeing parrots live to a ripe old age that’s one of the downsides I have friends and family to takeover the care if anything happens to me so just need some advice on where to source my companion with the right paperwork or any advice would be appreciated
Many Thanks Tony

Hi and welcome.

Sorry that you are in this situation but there’s lots of info and help on here.
Never owned a large parrot but my first thoughts would be their noise in an apartment, although others can advise. Are you stuck on an African grey or Amazon, there may be other larger quieter birds, pionus maybe?

Good morning to you too and welcome to the forum :)
Very sorry to hear of your loss that;s a heart breaker.
Hmmm not sure your thinking this through african greys and amazons can be really really loud. I live with three of each and my male amazons I can hear them when I am coming home from the top of my street! They can be a handful and mind blowingly loud. Two of my female greys I can honestly say are very loud for greys. In an apartment you would have to think about your neighbours and what they are going to hear. Ok so parrots are great they sleep 12 hour nights and are awake for 12 hour days at my house there is silence from 7pm until about 6.30am during the summer time (light nights make a difference). How about something like a conure (larger breed like a blue crown perhaps) or a caique still loud but not as deafening. Both excellent birds very interactive great company very intelligent.

Yeah I'd probably agree with the above, Conure or such, a small bird but with a big personality and also very affectionate (as a rule)

I've been quite lucky with my 2 greys, both have been "relatively" quiet, but they still let out some ear-piercing beeps, peeps and shouts, the noise can be almost non-stop, and most of it is whistles, and sounds, and noises that are cute, but even the quiet sounds/mimics can be heard by my neighbours, I live in a semi-detached and have a perfect neighbour who enjoys it.

But even the best neighbour in the world will tire of the noise at 6/7am when they want to stay in bed. (he's mine and I do :risas3: )

don't get me wrong, if your heart is set on these people can make it work, but it could be "work"

Could I asl what is drawing you to Greys or Amazons? what specifically makes you want these?

Hello and welcome 🙂
I too have had both Amazon's and a Grey and do agree about the volume, both can be incredibly loud and piercing! My caique was also quite loud for a smaller bird, but nowhere near the volume of the others. My first parrot was a girl galah and she was wonderful! She had a very sweet and funny little high pitched but musical "voice" and was extremely affectionate. I don't know if she was typical but her vocalisations were endearing. Not the most massive vocabulary but she did talk quite well, and she was a very interactive bird who loved to play games and give and receive affection, plus she was really smart. They're very pretty birds and while not quite as big as amazon's or greys they're still a decent size, much bigger than the conures or caiques.
