NEVER FEED ANY FOODS CONTAINING SALT OR SWEETNERS (Xylitol). - Salt toxicity in parrots can be fatal. For this reason do NOT feed table foods unless you cook without it.

NEVER EVER FEED AVOCADO OR CHOCOLATE OR LEEKS OR MUSHROOMS OR ONIONS
- These are poisonous to ALL PARROTS

DO NOT FEED ANY RED MEAT PRODUCTS
- Its high in protein and fat and they would never eat it in the wild. It could be harmful

Although Parrots can eat eggs, it should ONLY ever be fed in small amounts and ONLY once every 2 weeks. Please MAKE SURE its cooked properly, eggs can be a source of Salmonella.

NEVER OFFER
- Milk / Black coffee or Tea. These are very detrimental to parrots. No caffeine.

High Fat Foods - like chips, butter , high fat cheese are very harmful too. Parrots can suffer from high-cholesterol, heart attacks, clogged up arteries and enlarged liver.

DON’T FORGET that DIET is one of the most vital elements of your parrots well being. Everything starting from healthy skin to mental state and ease of training/taming and even ability to talk largely depends on the diet. SO DO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOUR FEEDING YOUR PARROT.

without thinking last night i gave poppy a cracker/water biscuit - it was only later that i though about salt and fat content. can some tell me if this is allowed in her diet.

hmmmm 2 questions.. i know about all this food stuff more or less, what i dont know or not sure of i ask or search for answers but...

like fruit..has sugar... bananachips have sugar.... so you cant avoid all sugar.

and tea... i read that decaf tea is fine, baby doesnt like it anyway but Budge loves a cup of tea.. so i am a bit confused now lol

the cracker / waffer buscuit is a processed food which will have added salt - so best to be avoided. I know I'm very OTT but I don't give anything that is processed food. I know pellets are processed but they are specifically for parrots. I try to always give natural food where possible. Parrots can have liver problems and these sorts of foods aren't good for them.

You're right Kerstin you can't avoid sugar altogether but the sugar in fruit is natural to the fruit - however, you shouldn't feed to much fruit - it should only be used as a treat really.

With regards to the tea I tend to avoid altogether however I do know people give herbal tea which I believe if you get the right one can be good for them xx

thx ann-marie... xxxx

I feed fruit daily but not much , so it is like an afternoon treat more or less

and Baby doesnt like tea so i wont start with Luna as well - eeeek 5 days to go lol

I must admit mine do get processed foods every so often.

In an ideal world I wouldn`t, but having so many living around us, i`d never be able to eat if we didn`t share a little. It`s usually things like pasta etc but we do cover some veg with grated cheese to get the really fussy Macaws eating it. They also have a biscuit about once a month too.

It`s hard with rescues, it`s no excuse, but when they`ve been fed it for years and years they scream the place down.

Maybe I`m a bad mummy :(

you are not Scarlett and we all know that and you should know it as well xxxx

TBH i think we all give them food sometimes they shouldnt have, but its also food that is not given on a daily basis - i also think the main advise and tips are good but as in human life..there are excemptions and every bird is different, specially you with your rescue ones :)

your not a bad mummy at all xx

I know exactly what you mean with rescue's. We've had this problem with 2 of them. I used to have to put Leo in a cage every time we had food or he was in it - literally! Its much easier when you have 1 or 2 but can imagine how hard it is when you have a full gang lol. I know I'm a bit overboard with these but I've always been a bit scared of doing something wrong with them. Thats the after effects of waltzing into a pet shop now having a clue what I was doing and coming home with a parrot! xx

Good post! I do feed banana chips as one of my parrots "training treats" They do have added sugar, but I am not concerned about it at all, he has had a full blood examination whilst on the same diet, and all was good, I think the concerns are with owners/carers who have no access to the internet or to a forum just like this one. Its not obvious in most cases when buying a parrot or inheriting one, It is some breeders/pet shops that need educating, members here will be aware and have taken the time and energy to join because they are ineterested in the welfare of their bird, its the people who havent joined a community that worries me. We need to get it out into a wider media?

Well, I think we have to think big, think out of the box so to speak, I mean we have members from all over the country i reckon? If we designed a parrot welfare leaflet, just one page so as not to lose the readers interest, did it in adobe so we can send to each member, then a member prints it and targets their local pet shop or breeder and comes to some arrangment where they take our leaflets? i think it could work? Like the breeder or petshop already has the a bunch of leaflets all done for them and we are advertising at the same time, it would only take good communication skills, and a bit of determination, and i think it could work, if we do it well I dont think breeders will mind? Basically they will advertise us and encourage new purchasers of parrots to join a good parrot welfare community, at the same time we add them to some sort of good breeders list?

sounds like a good idea to me - i already would know 2 petshops to put leaflets out and one of them will do for sure

Kerstin, Liz  I know one too, I am sure he would take them, we also have to remember, many members are elderly and dont have access to a community like ours, but they all have to go to a pet shop/vet to buy food etc, they can always hand out our leaflets when selling parrot food or accessories too?

good idea squid and like u say elderly people wont necessarily know things are bad for them as they havet been informed properly and have just always done it...how many stories have we heard about parrots being fed on biscuits crisps sunflowers and toast

Great idea squid, can we leave it in your capable hands to get a draft done :th_smiley_flowers:
