First time birb daddy

Hi guys, I just brought home a hand reared 7mo blue fronted amazon. His name is Odie, and he has already captured my heart after just 2 days. He's so chill and mild natured and seems to be already showing signs of becoming attached to me. He's only caged when I'm not here, and loves to perch on my shoulder, usually right when I need to get something done. Once there he nibbles the top of my ear and grooms my hair and nestles into my neck, it's absolutely adorable, but he also likes to sit near me on a perch and just chill there while we watch TV and stuff. When I sing to him, he vibrates which I hear is usually a happy thing, so I think things are going well.

Anyway, just introducing myself! I have done a lot of research but nothing beats first hand experience so I'm sure I will have a LOT of questions. Thanks for reading!

Welcome from me and my flock
We will love hearing about your ammie and seeing piccies

Wait till he gets older and he's decided you need to do as he says :risas3: the loud ammie wail fair makes your ears ring! And the first good bite when they test the boundaries yup it's gonna hurt! Alfie in my avatar is a "shoulder surfer" too they can be very lazy and want carrying everywhere! Now is the time to start training things like recall (asking your bird to fly to you on command for a treat/reward) or training to return to the cage on command (in case of emergency like an unplanned visitor arriving at the door) or training to go into his travel cage in case of vet visit plus eating lots of fresh veggies and fruit rather than allowing him to share "naughty foods". Everything has to be fun positive training lots of praise and if he gets bored just like humans do then you need to recognise it and stop and do something else they set the training pace not us :)

Hi and welcome from me and my flock. Odie is gorgeous.
I have a owa her name is Princess Mia, and she is a princess and a diva. Likes to be on my shoulder too. I just love ammies. I had a Mealy called Bernie but sadly at the start of last year she passed away. She unfortunately had a bad past but she had many happy years with us. I still keep in contact with the family that rescued her. I found out she was a very old bird.

They bring so much joy and noise too, but its worth it! So many happy memories ahead for you both.

So today I decided to jazz up Odie's TV & chill perch.

I wanted to give him more usable space as his feet slipped around on the bare metal. Across the top I made an area with thicker grip so he'd be able to stretch his feet a little more. Lastly I added a loop to hang destroyables from.

I'm really pleased how it turned out, even if he's highly likely to destroy it all pretty quickly!

It's dense cotton twine
I'm no expert but I've read that jute or sisal is better than cotton twine for this kind of thing.
There again, I speak from a budgie/parakeet standpoint so what I'm saying might not be relevant for larger birbs.
Someone will hopefully chime in and put me in my place :)

Fabulous looking setup, I have to say.

Odie is such a cutie! Welcome to both of you. I think with the cotton wrap, just watch out for him chewing on sections. If it's the softer stuff, it breaks up easily and can be ingested. One of our macaws likes to chew the cotton rope on her toys and once it's started to fray we have to remove it. It looks really good though and I bet it's much comfier on his toesies!
