First day out!

🥰 today Kiko and I Practiced our step up and step down and some more target training, we also hung out on the outside of the cage more and took in the view! Kiko loved the window and was at his most relaxed when he was near it :) so I reckon I’ve found his new play area! :)

Oh I should say I opened the blinds for him to see out but also to show him the glass window. It’s a tricky window in a narrow hallway which he doesn’t normally have access to so I’m not worried that he’ll fly into it at any speed, which makes it a great window to teach him about windows 😬

He’s not that brave with it atm but I am trying to get him to, I managed to tap my finger to the glass a few times but he leaned away when I tried to get him closer to it’s something we’ll have to tackle slowly😁 I had no idea parrots were so phobic, tried to feed him a tiny piece of apple and the little guy thought it was going to kill him 🤗 got him enjoying some millet spray for training though!!! Finally!! He thought that was going to kill him too the first few times I tried it.

Well done, its a bit like new toys some back away and eye them up like they are scary monsters!

Can you make a little stand to go on the windowlege then he may like to stand on there and look out.

unfortunately the windows in my place are very old and hand made glass that is not smooth or I would definably be buying the purchase that suction to the glass or window (they can be used on tiles in the shower room as well .

Brilliant progress!
We had an incident first time our parrotlet flew out where she flew into the window, it's good you're showing him that there is glass and it's not open for him to leave!
We have had to take the same approach with our grey and he rests his head on the glass now 😂
So happy for you that things are going well, he is a beauty!

Thanks all! I do actually have a stand near the window but it stands from the floor, might look into those window sucker stands 😁 It could double up for a shower perch! I really want to get him coming for some showers soon, as aside from leaving a shallow bowl of water in the bottom of his cage (which he had no interest in) he hasn’t had a bath or shower 😱
Also Today he did tap the window so that’s already progress! I’ll keep taking him there for his time out and slowly work our way around the house :) atm because we’ve had the first sun in over a week, he’s been outside this am catching some rays and happily chittering away.

😖 so I messed up!! Damn... sort of annoyed at myself for not being more on the ball but also feel like I kind of had no choice... Ok let me back track
I had a toy hanging from the ceiling of Kiko’s cage, it was in there from the beginning, up till a few days ago Kiko had ignored it, but then one morning I came to uncover his cage and found that he had actually roosted on this toy over night... firstly I was surprised as he did have a favourite roosting spot, not really sure why he changed it but I was more concerned about safely and him getting caught in the toy at night and me not knowing about it, so I moved the toy yesterday to the side of the cage but lower down, so that he wouldn’t roost on it but also if he did get caught he has the side of the cage to help himself out with... last night he really seemed to struggle to find somewhere to roost and although he eventually did choose his old spot I got the feeling it wasn’t a happy choice. So I put a rope perch in hanging from the top of the cage to the side of the cage this morning. He didn’t like it obviously, because he then tried this evening to roost on top of another toy when i went to cover his cage, except he very nearly got caught by his neck in the process 😱😱😱 i stopped cover the cage immediately and put my hand in to remove the rope toy, intending to put something he was more comfortable with there instead... I should have removed him from the cage, because It stressed him out. He came over and asked to get on my hand which I stupidly did, only to have him fly off into the living room.... long story short... I have a very sleepy parrotlet roosting in my living room right now with no way to entice him down till tomorrow morning when he gets hungry again 😖😖😖 Any ideas or am I going to have to sleep out here with him? Catching is NOT an option I’ve worked waaay to hard to earn this little guys trust 😢 in the mean time I’ve sorted the other toy out that was dangerous... it was my fault completely I had hung it in such a way that a loop of rope was dangling down near the top of the cage. He was basically trying to perch on the loop but could so easily have gotten caught up in it.

Oh dear, well maybe you could put a corner shelf high up in his cage or a perch as you know they like to roost up hight and he will likely choose one of those in future.
Bes to take rope/loop things out in my opinion.
As for tonight I've no idea, is the room safe for him to be left in overnight?

I’m going to sleep in here with him, he’s settled on a perch I had made and hung for him at a high point in the corner of the room, I can’t see him moving before then but I’d rather be in here just in case he does have a night scare or even start moving around before I’m up. I’ve actually taken the opportunity to do just as you’ve suggested. I’ve rehung the toys in a safer way (they are those kabob wood chews which had bits of string looped at the top, I’ve untied them and retied them to hang safely. I’ve also put another cork perch at the Top of his cage, he really likes them so hoping he chooses that tomorrow night 🤞at least now even if he tries to perch on the wood kabob he can’t try to perch on that loop sting end 😰 big lesson learned.

We've all made mistakes! I think you are wise to stay in the same room so he'll know he isn't alone in a completely weird situation. Bon chance!

Oh no!
We have all made mistakes as parrot owners, i remember getting Fifi our parrotlet a toy which had loads of fun things to chew and at the side had some little hoops all interlinked also made to chew of thin cardboard type items.
I remember once sitting in the living room next to her cage and noticed she had her head through a loop itching her neck, she lost her footing and was dangling, luckily she got her footing as i rushed up to help her but i took the toy out and have learnt from that.
Still scares me to this day to think if the poor girl would have been in the house alone what would have happened. It taught me to buy safe parrot toys instead of fun colourful items. Fifi was fine, it was me who got shocked into shape!

Hope your little guy is okay. Fifi loves perching high and will balance on any toy which is up there, i have managed to get her a wooden swing which has no sharps or loops and is where she loves to sleep now.
Although not great for yourself it's nice your little guy feels secure to sleep in your room! Don't beat yourself up too much, we all learn from our mistakes. Glad to hear you are making progress this little accident aside 😄

Morning all, Kiko slept ok last night 🥱 He normally gets up around 7am so I’ll start making his breakfast in a bit and hoping that will bring him back down... have to admit he looks mighty happy with his new roost spot 😱😱 he’s got another thing coming if he thinks that’s how it’s going to work from now on 🤣😅

So pleased you both came safely through the night. Yes you will have to watchout tonigh or he will be up there to roost again!

Hey all! Thought I’d give you all an update on Kiko! He’s FINALLY comfortable flying around our main living room 🥳🥳 it’s literally been all this time! My little man had some serious confidence issues! I heard that shredding toys and stuff can make birds more confident so I gave him lots of destruction options in his cage, that and a little time and positive reinforcement means I don’t have to hang out with him exclusively in the tiny hallway anymore 😁😁 he still goes there and checks out the neighbourhood birds and plays on his playground but he’s started exploring more of the main room and is doing amazing Laps around the room now with minimal crashing (thank goodness! I was all nerves during those the first flights 😱)
Another progress step is that Kiko has become the biggest cuddle fluff ball😍😍 he loves his head scratches especially when his moult was bad, Having him out pretty much all the time when I’m around has really helped to build trust between us, he’s discovered my head is a great vantage point and that the best snuggle spot Is against my neck tucked into my collar 🥰 honestly we couldn’t imagine life without this little dude 🥰9D9F40FD-0772-489E-8133-B356EB51EF72.jpeg
