Fireworks – Bonfire Night – New Year’s Eve

How To Help Your Bird(s)

This document has been compiled by the members of this forum to help future members and each other during what can be a very stressful time for our feathered friends, namely Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve.

It is a compilation of what the members do for their beloved feathered family members and we hope it will help future members and those viewing as guests to help keep their bird’s safe and stress free.

Some of the suggestions in here are for pet house birds and some for the aviary more wilder flocks.

If you have any additions you would like to make please feel free to add it to the bottom of this post.

This post has simply been done to gather all the thoughts and things done into one place to ensure ease of future readers.

Pet / House Birds

Keep them caged so they don’t get spooked and fly around the house and damage themselves.

Close curtain and blinds to muffle some sounds and lights.

Close interior doors so that any sounds do not carry from other rooms.

Turn up the volume of the radio or telly to mask louds bangs and whooshes.

If your neighbors have a firework party / display in their garden then try to put their cage as far away as possible in another room.

Never leave a bird close to a window and of course never have any windows open.

Stay with your bird and spend your time interacting in a positive manner make lite of loud scary noises with positive upbeat voice, if necessary sing and dance with them to entertain them make it a whole new game.

Aviary Birds

For the aviary birds try to set any automatic lights on a timer so that the lights come on at dusk and stay on until midnight (or in the case of New Year’s Eve after midnight!). That way if any of the aviary birds spooked up they aren’t crashing around in the dark damaging themselves or worse.

Well its that time of year again, time to think and prepare for the bonfire night noise and smells. Remember to check the bonfire BEFORE you light it incase any hedgehogs have crawled inside to hibernate (take it apart and build it the other side of the garden if necessary :( I hate this time of year....

Anyways not just our animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits etc need to be thought about but so too do your birds be they house birds or aviary one.

A timely reminder...there always seem to be far too many fireworks around here.... i shall be practising my singing and dancing routine!

Note to self....new study and document required regarding the scariness and impaction on birds of random but spontaneous outbursts of singing and dancing by humans in front of their flock members ........ :risas3:

:risas3: it's only to mask the darned noise of the fireworks! Poor parrots

why can't someone invent fireworks that look, nice but don't make a racket .... I know it's all to do with the science...but it would be good!

Don't encourage them Jude for heavens sake!! I just want them to ban it and have done  :nono:  totally hate bonfire night  besides all that money for a 10 second hit of colour  :dntknw:  barmy!! All that smoke, burning rubbish, debris from fireworks and disruption to wildlife and pets alike.... fecking hate it!!! Always starts a couple of days beforehand and runs for a couple of days afterwards as well. Hope the weather is naff and it rains!

The local pub has popped leaflets through everybody's door this year to say they are having a pyrotechnics party :(  means its going to be super loud for 15/20 minutes.  They have to give us fair warning these days as local residents threatened to take them to court over noise pollution and causing disruption regarding the number of vehicles parked in surrounding streets a few years ago when they decided to do one. Many of us couldn't even get on to our own driveways as people had parked across them  :nono:

BAH HUMBUG

It seems to go on for months round here....as soon as the darned things go on sale...and it bugs me that all the shops have them on special offers. So as well as the ordinary punters with more money than sense, we have the pub/hotel, the holiday camp, the golf club up on the hill behind and the scouts at the village hall...all on different nights... :smiley-signs131:  that's a lot of singing and dancing!

I wish they would ban them too!

I wish they would ban them too, or at the very least narrow it down to organised displays only and only on the actual bonfire night!

We get a few round here but not too many thankfully. I really hate them and to think of the bonfires and the hedgehogs, that just makes me feel sick.

Luckily we don't have many here, there's a few pops & bangs and some displays, parrots don't seem bothered but Arthur dog he hastes anything like that.

It is never mentioned about the pollution it causes!

We lost 2  of the aviary birds this year 1 female crested canariy and 1 Chinese painted Quail not to bad considering the amount of fireworks around we had display just up the road which was fairly loud.

Weve got electric in the shed of our aviary so we always have a radio on very low all the time for some background noise.

We also we bought one of those plug in night lights which plug into the sockets these are not to bright as into startle the birds and it gives a very subtle light glow.

On the outdoor flights we've got low light level led solar powered rope lights which are threaded through the roof beams these work great stops any night frights and are really cheap to buy think we paid about a tenner from poundstretcher for them.

There quite jumpy birds I was surprised I didn't lose more especially the finches, it happens and its just one of those things it could also be the change in the weather as well you live and learn

It's the noisy season again :watchout:
I thought it might be a little early to get this thread out of the library...and was prompted to when we were disturbed at 10:15 last night, by people letting off fireworks down on the beach.....but noticed on doing so that it was around this time last year that we did.

Please read the advice in the first post of this thread and keep your birdies safe from scares as we approach the main firework season.

Agree with the previous sentiments re organised displays only but in all honesty with Diwali from 18/10-22/10/2017 it just continues to whoosh, fizz, bang right through into November. Surely would be much safer? Petition your MP LOL!

Thank for this @TomsMum thankfully our birds and rabbits don’t seem fussed. Our springer used to be petrified but she’s got better has time has passed. lt’s the horses that l often worry about as the bangers seem to be louder nowadays. l have to open our field up and take the electric fencing down as they’d charge through it if scared. There were some ponies that had to be put down after being injured through fireworks scaring them. Very sad for any animal suffering from fear due to fireworks.
