Dead Birds, Feeling Down

So this morning my wife let the chickens out as I had a head ache, this is when I normally check on the aviary bunch. When I woke up we had to race out to a appointment so I didn't check on them. Came home and grabbed some fresh veg and food for them and went out to find Ringo and greeny on the floor dead in there bed area. The other two seem ok but if they are sick as we all know it's so hard to tell. I have put all my clothes in the wash so not to spread anything to other birds. I don't like to say but I have had to break a few birds necks in my time when i have found them suffering on dog walks etc and I know what a broken neck feels like both birds had broken necks so I assume they must have been spooked in the night and flown into a wall or something. ringo was a little sh*t but he was loved fed and watered and my wife's fave bird. We are all really shocked more than anything as ringo was a fighter and a strong stunning male. Lots of tears in my house tonight, feeling gutted.

:emoji_cry::emoji_cry: I’m so, so sorry to read this news. Fly free dear little ones :emoji_rainbow: xxx

Oh my goodness, I am so very sorry this happened, fly free together little ones xx

So so sad ringo was only three and greeny was only 1. My dad loved that yellow chicken too. Such a big character o gosh I feel so sad, I might have to have a beer or two, not drank for over 6 months

I hate news like this and I am so sorry, I know you will be looking for answers, how cold did it get to last night? was it windy? could it been a fox, raptor, rat that frightened them, there are many questions you can ask yourself and we all look at our selves and ask if we had done something wrong. first thing is check the birds for injury or pultruding breast bone. could they of gained access to a plant or berries that are toxic? Of course I am thinking of the other birds so you need to find the answer. fly free Ringo and Greeny to rainbow bridge

Hi Michael I have looked around every inch of the aviary and there is no access or evidence of rodents, a fox has definitely not been in as it's double caged and it surly would have gone for the chickens. It wasn't windy or very cold last night they have stuck out all the wind and rain recently it was a fairly still night. There is no way what so ever they could have got any other food than what I put in. It's so frustrating that's why I think it must have been somthing that spooked them or a loud noise

So sorry to hear this - it's so sad.
Shine bright, little ones.

Sorry to hear this, very sad.

Strange that its two of them, do they have a nice warm box they can feel safe in or 'hide' in during the night?

night frights can be bad and with more then one getting spooked it would have ramped up the danger as their panic would have infected each other. I am so sorry. if its very dark at night prehapse a small low night light would help prevent anything else like this happening again as at least they would be able to see where going, in my own aviary I have seen them spook but the aviary cops some spill over light from nearby street lighting so is never completely dark which I think has saved mine in past

There is two nest boxes with big holes in the front so they don't breed but can get good shelter, there bed area is completely under cover and dry with 90% wind protection and there is a few sheltered perches which they all like to use even though there is more shelter available. However with the constant storms we are having I think I'm going to make a better sleeping house. Yes it's really strange two died together

Thanks for the advice sunny there is a near by street light but it's very dark in their bed area. What do you have for your birds to sleep in the aviary?

I have a whopping great street light 10 foot away behind fence..... makes it a little easier lol. to be honest living in city the light pollution means I can walk around garden in the middle of night and not need a torch.

Really sorry to hear of your loss fly free little ones.
I will lay bets you have a mouse going in the aviary and its panicked the birds during the night by bumping in to them and them subsequently bumping into each other.
Stressed birds do look really sick takes a bit for them to come around from shock
Sound advice from Sunnyring x

Oh no I am so sorry to hear this :emoji_cry:. I know too well what night frights can cause. I am so sorry you had to go through this as well.
