Cotton or sisal

Hi,

I was going to make another playstand for my birds that I can hang from the ceiling and I was just wondering if I would be better using cotton or sisal to hang it? 🤔
Thanks 😊

We use chain to hang our perches from the ceiling.

I drill a hole (or two) into the ceiling and insert a raw plug, then screw in a large cup hook. Then you can hang a chain from it. We use plastic chain from a parrot supply or you can use metal chain, but we cover our metal chain with sisal rope.

In the image below, we use a combination of plastic piping, chain and "D" Quick links

Please note if drilling into the ceiling of a building built 2000 or earlier, take precautions as Artex and plaster may contain asbestos even thou the amount is minuscule.

I live in quite an old building so that may be an issue. I was thinking about maybe getting a wall bracket to hang it from instead of drilling into the roof just incase 🤔 i havent quite decided what I am building although I have a rough idea. Was going to screw some willow branches together to get the shape i wanted and attach some sisal rope to each corner and hang it up. Still not quite sure though but ill be starting it this week 😊

We also use chain, and have a few metal hooks in place around the room. We are going to be getting some thick sisal rope and hook that in between too, so they have more climbing areas.

I might use some chain as well as the rope. I have an image in my head of what I want to make I just need to make it 😂 I was tempted to just cover my living room in sisal ropes from one side of the room to the other but perhaps that might be excessive... However my birds have already taken over the living room and have me vacating when its bed time :risas3:

You could try an hanging basket wall bracket or you could make a free standing frame as shown on this site, see the slide show number 48

Yeah i was thinking of using something like the kind of bracket used for hanging baskets. Im going to use willow for the main part of it and either sisal or chain to hang it or maybe a combination of both. Will be easier to decide what im doing once I get started. I was making tree stands for other people after receiving quite a bit of interest. I kind of got a bit disheartened as there are so many negative people on social media that just respond to things for the sake of being nasty because they have nothing better to do with their day 😔 I like making them though, keeps me busy and its quite theraputic. I can see my flat turning into one massive parrot play area :risas3: Waiting on adopting another bird which im really excited about so it will have plenty to play with when it moves in too which will be great

Did some more work on it today. Almost done just need some chain and stuff to fix it to my ceiling. Used some bits i cut to make perches too

This sounds really interesting and would love to put these in the bird room but I have my doubts about the strength of the roof, (looks like home made plywood) and the walls are covered in acrylic for easy cleaning. I hang things from their ropes but they have mixed reception and evil Lucy just destroys some things so no one else can play. The ideas are great though and maybe I can adapt to suit, hopefully.

I only have my parrotlets at the moment and this is my 2nd playgym that ive made so perhaps a bit excessive :risas3: I'm making for all the future birds I plan to get 😛

My other one is just a regular tree stand that i made out of willow but I wanted something a bit different so decided to make this out of the willow branches that I had left over. Im also a bit worried about my roof although its not that heavy. I attached toy hooks to the top section of the branches too so i can hang toys from it.

My parrotlets sometimes venture onto their tree but they can be wary of new things. They like flying to places that are high up, i assume because they feel safer there so maybe they will like this one more.

They are getting better though at exploring. I had them forgaging inside a cardboard box the other day and then yesterday they flew onto the side table next to me and ate their food there. I've tried training them but they are bonded to each other so im not all that interesting but we coexist happily and the trust is growing at their pace. They will be spoilt for choice now with all these places to play. Ill soon be running out of space for my stuff :nut: waiting for rescue centre to have a match for me so i can adopt a new larger parrot and im so excited!

Theres so many good ideas for playstands and the slide that @RoyJess linked is full of different options so maybe you will find something better suited there @Kendra. What kind of bird is Lucy and why is she evil? I like the idea of acrylic walls. I remember my IRN used to cover the walls of my parents house with raspberry, was like a crime scene. Luckily my parrotlets can't fling their food as far although they do like to clean their beaks on my carpet

Got it put up today and already these two are exploring it which is great to see because theyre usually so cautious of new things. Took them a few fly bys before they landed and Pan (green) always leads the way and is bravest out of the two of them. Loving seeing them enjoy it though
