Conure hideaway?

Hi,

We have just got our first parrot, a Green Cheek Conure called Rio (4 months old). He/she seems quite happy in their cage at the moment and of an evening we cover 3 side of the cage with a dark cotton sheet. However, we are wondering if the cage should have some kind of hideaway in it? what do people recommend. I've see that the cosy/snuggle trapezoid hideaways are bad for them. Has anyone got any other suggestions? currently Rio grips the bars and hides up in a corner when night time falls.

I would love to hear any suggestions/pictures you have. Links also useful! as any advice i have found is years out of date with products that cannot be purchased anymore.

Hello and welcome, cosy huts can be dangerous if the bird chews at them, but I do have a box in some of the birds cages as conures do like to sleep in the dark. the only thing is as your bird gets older it may help your bird become hormonal. I have not had that problem but others have

Hi, cozy huts and such like have been the cause of some sad deaths. It sounds like there isn't a place that your bird feels happy roosting at night so I would pay that some attention and have a look at perches and where they are located and see if you can help in this way. Boxes are always useful toys and my Patagonian loves his, sure he falls asleep in there sometimes in the day. Any unwanted behaviour, over aggressiveness relating to this item and best to give it a break and intro a new toy instead.

I have always completely covered the cages at bedtime. See how this goes and if no joy come back to us hun.

I was thinking about getting a corner perch. or would some natural wood perches near the corners be better?

Pay attention to his chosen roosting height and position in his cage. A natural cleaned tree branch from the list of safe ones offers good exercise for feet and something to potentially have a chew at.

Ours have always slept in a cockatiel-sized pine nestbox as recommended by the breeder, and seem happy in there (has been replaced a couple of times due to "remodelling" though). They've never shown any interest in sleeping on a perch or out in the open. A couple of times when they were babies they came out at night to investigate things, couldn't find the way back in, and huddled up in the corner of the floor looking sorry for themselves till found by humans and put back. Rio probably going to the corner because that's the most enclosed space he can find rather than acually preferring corner. When in the box the wife has seen them sleeping on their backs, which they seem to find comfortable. (I suspected this but was never able to catch them at it.) They also like to go in the box when feeling insecure or scared during the day.

I really think it's better for the little Pyrrhura conures to have a box as sleeping place and refuge, judging by the behaviour of ours. I suspect the wild ones prefer tree hollows or similar for sleeping. Far less risk of accidents with a wooden box, too, I wouldn't trust those fabric things.
