I am just giving some advice to pet owners who are thinking about making their pets a new cage/ aviary ect...We have had aviary birds for a long time now & had many aviaries that my husband has erected himself.on this new build we have suffered a catastrophic loss of a total of 8 Lorikeet Parrots. After finishing the inside enclosure,my husband successfully erected a new outside space for them in the nicer weather. We added branches & rope swings for them & they really enjoyed having access to the outside. we had an old weather beaten table & bench,So rather than bucket them we chopped it up to use as swings & rope ladders. We noticed quite quickly that the lorikeet parrots were quite vigourously eating away at the cartwheels from the old table & bench.
A couple of months ago we lost 4 lorikeet parrots & after the autopsy we requested, the cause of death was Gastroenteritis, but we never found out at this point what caused the Gastroenteritis, so my husband purchased another 4 Lorikeets Just over a month ago & at the beginning of this week, he went out to feed them & found the 4 new Parrots dead in their cage? We were obviously devastated again & after some Serious Consideration have now found out that the garden furniture with it's preservatives that had been on it had been the cause. We were able to come to this conclusion as the lorikeets were the only birds that eat the wheels & the 2 breeding lorikeets that we had seperated & never let outside into the enclosure are absolutely fine along with the cockatiels, who did not have access to the outdoor enclosure until recently.
I just want anyone who is building their own cages & aviaries to take our very sad story & avoid putting preserved wood anywhere near your pets who will naturally just want to chew It? Everything that had any preservative on it has now been removed & we will only be replacing swings & ropes with untreated or natural wood & branches..Please don't be as uninformed as we were & lose your very much loved pets???...
