My 2 year old Caique is biting the elbow on his wing . He’s not plucking feathers just biting on one part . Been to vet and she can’t find anything wrong . I’m just worried he breaks the skin and could cause infection. He’s healthy playful eating fine . Has anyone any suggestions to stop him from doing this . Much appreciated .

Is it a stress reaction hun? Note when he does this and you may find it's behavioural? My Pat Conure used to do something similar but on his leg, he didn't break the skin.

Do they feel spikey like new feathers do as they are growing, ie they are still in their sheath?

Could be a problem pin feather coming through and sometimes but very rarely an ingrowing feather. How often does he have a spray misting or proper bath?
My flock are all in a heavy moult at the moment an everyone is itchy and cranky with it!

He doesn’t seem stressed . He plays away as normal , he’s out the cage a lot and has lots of attention. He will lie n his back playing then part way through play he starts biting his wing as though itch driving him mad . We thought at first when we seen him he was playing and excited. He does it on perch and stairs too now . We know when he’s going to do it as he turns in circles before he starts biting his wing .

He has spray bath a few times a week then he bathes himself as normal . We don’t see any new feathers coming through and he is not in moult yet .

My friend @Zoe220615 had a very similar experience with her orange winged amazon Reggie. He went to the vet and they said it was a calcium deficiency. He got a shot of calcium and supplement to continue taking and hes been fine ever since. She is currently eating dinner but will be on shortly!
