Hey people.
First Post here after a while of lurking. So hey everyone!

4 months ago me and the missus got our first pet/bird/parrot, at 12 weeks old from a breeder.
Her name is luna and seems to have settled very well, training is fine. Step up plus recall.

For maybe 6 weeks she's been itching back of her her neck a lot, and we're a little concerned at this point.
Anyone had experience with this?
Any advice would be amazing really.
Thanks everyone. IMG_20200225_175455_compress94.jpgIMG_20200225_180413_compress59.jpgIMG_20200225_180357_compress67.jpg

She really is lovely,
These pictures aren't the most flattering but when dry it's quite hard to photograph unless her head is down.

Hi and welcome to the forum
Oooo that looks sore :( poor Luna yup agree with Diana that's s vet job as it's localised to back of head / neck area that is from rubbing and scratching with feet possible scratch from a sharp claw perhaps has started an irritating infection? But definitely a vet question please ensure you find an avian vet not an exotic or one with bird interests to for avian qualified one

Thanks for your reply.

She scratches it with her foot quite often through the evening and everything I've tried just doesn't seem to help it all that much.
We did take her to a avian vet who gave her something for mites a week ago which doesn't seemed to have helped, all in all he didn't seem that concerned about it.
Going to call tomorrow and email these photos over as it's hard to see when she's dry.
I'm assuming something is wrong though and she isn't supposed to do this right..
Thank you guys

Hmm can't say that's something I've seen before.

Out of interest can you show us some pictures when it is dry.

What did the vet give you to treat for the mites?
Has any blood work been done to check for psittacosis, pbfd, polyoma and general overall health?

Have you used any sprays around the little one or do you touch that part of their neck, does anyone smoke whose interacted with them?

Hey.
I don't remember but it was put on her skin above her chest.
She's had no bloodwork but that is something we're considering.
Funny you'd say about smoking I quit 2 days ago from a heavy habit, outside the house.. but I scratch her head there, though not much these days because of the feather loss.
The vet also said smoking had to stop completely.
Think this could have caused it?IMG_20200225_211835_compress97.jpgIMG_20200225_211824_compress55.jpg

It's a possibility. The smoke residue will be on your clothes and hands even after washing numerous times. When you touch your bird or it steps up that residue transfers onto the birds feathers and skin and causes irritation.

Try give them warm water sprays every day to help wash any residue off their skin and surrounding feathers but it may take a moult before it has gone completely. For now if you can avoid giving the. Head scratches as the residue may still be on your skin.
Give everything you can in their room a good wash. Including the cage and toys etc. Just to really help remove any smoke residue. I use f10 disinfectant as it's bird safe.

I would still advise getting blood work done just to rule other things out. But it would be interesting to see if this behaviour stops once the new feathers come in and there's no more smoke residue.

Hello and welcome, I will say that blunting her nails may stop a lot of the damage she is causing herself so ask your vet, yes get bloods completed, I will say I have never come across this problem with such a young grey, what is her diet?

Thanks for replies guys.
I'll get all my clothes an Etx through wash and clean up the room and cage as best I can.
Keep spraying her daily to try relieve it somewhat.
Going to get blood work done ASAP and see vet again.
She's on harrisons course potent pellets.
Fresh vegs especially kale and brocoli once a day. Sunflower seeds for training and nuts for her foregeing toys.
Also introduced a bird lamp and humidifier to the room a week ago to try help.

Hi and welcome, I have a grey called Luna as well, yes definitely looks red and raw I would do as said above strop touching her neck and visit the vet or at least send pics to them.

Awesome..
Going to do it in morning and I'll keep you all posted with her progress.
Just upsetting to not be able to help it currently, fear the skin will break and this will become a habit for life.
Thanks everyone for you help
