Had to take Annie my grey to vets for a blood and faecal tests, has she has recently started plucking herself, she started on her legs first then her chest. we decided on full tests because we lost my other grey Lara a few months ago. The tests cost £260 and we get the results back on tuesday also she was weighed and she is only 450g which the vet said was a little low.

Fingers crossed its just stress related to loosing your other bird rather than illness.
450 isn't bad if my little Henni weighed in at 450 my vet would have a flipping duck fit and have her booked in at weightwatchers! There is an avian vet in America that has done a fab study of average weights of different species that come into his practice he keeps on updating it :)

Your bird at 450 is smack on target as 447 is the average of 3298 African greys weighed.

Hi Paulmk. To me 450g is a good weight and near the correct weight that a female grey should be. Can I just ask had the plucking become more noticeable from the time that Lara passed away? Its good to have the tests done at least if there is a proble. It can be resolved by diet or medications.

Bloodtest results came back today and all at right levels ie calcium, white cells ect. Just a few more days for the poo sample results to come back but the vet feels that it due to losing lara that has been the onset of her plucking, will keep udating when i know more.

Glad the bloods have come back in it's always a good thing to get them checked sporadically to make sure that birds are getting all they need nutritionally :)

Poo tests are back and she is clear of everything, we are so pleased, after losing Lara we were a bit worried because Lara had breathing problems from a young age and suffered a massive heart attack when playing on her jungle gym. the vet agrees that the trauma of Annie seeing this as most probably the cue for her plucking.

Wonderful news that all is clear.
Now just need time for her to settle and calm herself from all the events. She may well be a bird that does better with other bird company so perhaps is feeling a tad insecure at the moment as well.

We also have TJ who is Annies full sister, but they hate eachother with a passion hahahaha.

Well time to clock in with Roz on here she will no doubt have some excellent tips on how to get the two of them looking at each other in a positive manner and that friends is a good way to be. Some friendships just take a bit more time than others and this friendship will naturally be slightly different to the last one as all friendships are between two different personalities :)
Some thing just take time and patience and a another good splosh of the same.
