blood tests

hiya! thought i’d just ask on here, how much was it for your bird to have blood tests if you have had them done? have to take one of (possibly both not sure yet) my budgies for some this week and i’m panicking about the cost and not being able to afford it so any prices you can give would be super helpful!

Vets are a business and prices do vary
What are you having your birds tested for? Some tests you can do yourself without blood (ie by feathers or poop and by using a company called Animal Genetics UK they do disease testing etc.

is it for your budgies? very few vets will be willing to take bloods from budgies owing to the chance of death, they will only take bloods if they fill it is the last resort

About the same as Scott, £140 ish all in. That included anaesthesia though as our macaw was having another little procedure at the same time. He's had both done individually without. On small birds, they prefer no anaesthesia if poss due to the risk. I wouldn't have thought they'd take bloods unless it was absolutely necessary. Why don't you give the vet (I'm presuming it's a specialist avian vet?) a call and get more details tomorrow. Then you will know for sure.

this sounds the most promising about hearing about the risk from other comments! i would much rather do this and not have to pay as much of a ridiculous amount + no risk

yes it is, had no idea it is such a risk before hearing these comments so mega nervous now, someone else has said there’s an online service that can use feathers etc so I think i’ll cancel my appointment and use that instead

May I ask the reason you need them to have a blood test.
one of my budgies appears to have french moult, she (we think she’s a girl but but unsure) also is extremely tiny even though she’s the same age as my other budgie so need tests for any immune problems etc. my other budgie, had a strange feather develop with a build up of.. something at the base and has a large sore/wound where it came out of and they need to know the cause of why that’s happening, the vet said she could see similar ones also growing.

Post a photo of the bird in question somebody on here will be able to say if it's a hen or not.
Funny feather with something at the base sounds like a feather cyst.... But if there's more than that one hmmmm a possibility of one has it the other is more than likely to have it... Same age purchased together likely same breeder and more than likely they are related.

have a read of these

These will give you a good idea of which tests to ask for and also what, if it is that, to expect.

i would not cancel the appointment as you vet should be able to tell you if it is an infection or mites and even if he thinks it is French moult by simple tests and the treatment may be under 50 pounds, a cockatiel that had mites i had taken to my vet and treated and cured for £27.49
