Bit by Cockatoo

Hello! Twice in the last 2.5 months, our U2 bit our Cherry Head Conure. The second time was through the cage, but not sure about first time. After the first time, I stopped allowing them out at same time. After second time, I let U2 out only under close supervision, or when I have Conure in another room.

Any other ideas to avoid this? Something to prevent the U2 from climbing on Conure’s cage?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Unfortunately this often happens. In my opinion take the Conure into another room when the U2 is out, or cover Conures cage, also cover U2 cage when Conure is out as if he lands on there he will get his feet bitten.

Hey Jazzy long time no see :)
I always pop a thick towel over the cage of the bird that is staying in whilst somebody else is out.
I cover all three of my grey's cages when any of the amazon boys are out. Henni a grey will bite anybody going on top of her cage and MrP will try and get anybody in a cage! So as they take turns the towels just switch over to the next cage I cover the top and it hangs down the sides but not the front if you follow my meaning. Also I never allow anybody out unsupervised its a recipe for disaster in this house there's always somebody who seems to be wearing their grumpy socks :noidea:

Thanks for the reply! The conure never goes over to U2’s cage. I believe U2 goes to conures cage bc she wants to bond, but he doesn’t, so he nips and she nips back.

Hey hey. Thanks for the reply! Yes, things have been hectic this year. My 39 year old brother in law developed pneumonia in February. He ended up having bilateral lung transplant in June.

I do have a magnet cage cover for conure and U2. Don’t use for Gus the Conure but maybe I could use that when Jasmine is out. I wonder if she’s hormonal and that’s why she’s going to his cage. In the past, she’s gone through spurts of doing this, but it never resulted in any type of injuries.

Gus has an appointment with his doctor later today, which will be the first time she’s seen him since this bite. But I was able to get a refill of medication‘s because of it happening back in May. And I had this appointment actually scheduled for Jasmine as a general check up, but changed it to Gus because of the bite. Hopefully she’ll say it’s healing well.

The other thing I thought about, since Jasmine does seem to want to bond. Which I mainly say because we used to have a sun conure when we first adopted the birds and they were bonded. We have four bird hunting dogs and a month after bringing the three birds home from my mom‘s house after she passed away, one of our dogs got the sun Conure. Anyhow, I wondered if maybe getting a little budgie or some thing for her would be helpful. It seems like budgies would probably be the most low maintenance and they don’t live as long. Thoughts?

Parrots can have weird dynamics… my friend has 2 amazon parrots, 2 pionus parrots and one macaw, some time ago she decided to temporarily look after cockatiel and at first everything was great, nobody minded little guy flying around until one day out of nothing one of her pionuses decided it’s great idea to chase him around, she never harmed him but she would chase him at every opportunity so in the end my friend found him nice home with other cockatiels because she was worried that her pionus one day might take things further than just chasing

Awwww. Better safe than sorry for sure.

WOW bilateral lung transplant YIKES!!!
No wouldn't match a U2 with a smaller bird or a bird not as powerful either. Just because we choose a bird doesn't mean that the birds are going to get along.
Yeah, that’s what I figured. It could be more problematic than anything. Just wish she had a friend like she did in Sunny.

Right. It’s been a long year! My husband is his primary caregiver. They’re living near the hospital where transplant was done, until end of September. It’s just an hour and a half away, but still.

My sister in law sent me info on a U2 that needs rehomed. I don’t think I’m up for another one. Maybe if we had a bigger space for them.

Vet said most recent wounds are below growth plate, so that’s good. Will keep him on antibiotics and ensure no chance for it to happen again.
