Berts not well

Just thought I’d post as I’m at a loss, Bert was fine, but yesterday he was a bit lazy, quiet, lethargic and seemed to be panting so I called the vet and booked him in today, today he seemed much better, still not himself but dancing and talking again.

went to the vet at 1 today as we were talking he popped blood and they took him straight in.

came back out and said they had real concerns he pooped more blood and they could hear a slight crackle in his lungs, they have kept him to do X-rays and blood/fecal tests.

I’m sat back at home waiting for a call, they said they couldn’t give me any info before tests but they were very worried, I’m sat here with worries to death now.

any ideas ?

The first thing to come to mind is metal poisoning?
I assume your vets ruling that one out?

Off the top of my head in drawing a blank I'm afraid.

I've got everything crossed for you though x

Yes metal poisoning was my thought, I’ve checked every inch of his cage and nothing, no bits of powder coating has come off, he’s never out unsupervised and every clip, bolt, chain, bowl is stainless.

Well just got off the phone with the vets, metal toxicity is a no, but the poor little lad is fighting quite a few others things.

I may have this wrong as I’m in a bit of a state but he has an enlarged heart which is putting pressure on his air sacks and that’s why he’s panting, he has some type of fluid around his liver, they can’t see the liver on the X-rays as the fluid is blocking it, but blood work does show liver problems and he’s low in calcium.

they can’t remove the fluid at this point as his hearts weak and the shock may, well you know.

Vet said the next 24/48 hrs are critical and if they can stabilise one of the problem they can then try to effect one of the problems.

he’s likely to be there for 3-5 days if they can stabilise him.

but he did say that Bert has come round from the x-rays and is active and chatting, asking where I am.

he’s on some recovery formulae and a slight bit of heart meds, once they raise his calcium they can then start him heart meds.

I think I have that right but I’m a little in a pickle, likely outcome if all does well, heart meds twice a day and a liver supplement but he was optimistic that he could have a normal (ish) life if all goes well.

I fear a long few days and nights ahead but if the little lad keeps fighting then he’s getting everything we can give/throw at him.

Dear Bert he is certainly in good hands and being taken excellent care of, nevertheless it does not stop you worrying, that I totally understand.
Don't forget we are all here for you.

Thank you all, doesn’t matter how much the vet tells me you still have that “what did I do wrong” feeling.

Im just so shocked how quickly he went down hill.

We can and do all blame ourselves but in this case it sounds like he has had the problem for a while and its only just got bad enough to show up. I have been in a similar situation with Conker but she recovered although this was a birth defect but the liver was larger, not in its normal position and putting pressure on her air sacks. the problem is even though she is ok at the moment there is a chance that fluids can return to the air sack at any time. I do hope Bert recovers and my thoughts are with you, have you informed the charity?

Keeping everything crossed for the little fighter!

Don't best yourself up about it, they hide illness as long as possible so you couldn't have known and there's absolutely nothing you could have done differently x

Thank you all.

@Michael Reynolds yes they have said the same that if he recovers we would need regular check-ups/tests on liver and function

I haven’t informed the charity yet, I did call them this morning to try and get any past info/treatments they had on file to tell my vet but they didn’t have anything and just said to call them when I know more, at this point my only worry is Bert, I’ll let them know when I do,

to be honest they were a a little flippant about my concerns until they realised hes a foster not a safe house, then that changed to “oh go direct to a vet” type of attitude, I can only assume as this vet bill is my problem and not theirs, I feel Christmas may be delays a year or so 😂

I won’t lie I’m a little annoyed (probably just want something or someone to blame) but I’ve had a inclination he wasn’t right from day one but just put it down to my paranoia and the fact it was completely without experience.
His poops were perfectly normal today and I took pics of yesterday and today and the vet said they didn’t look good but that’s how they have always been so I went with “his” normal, assuming he had been checked by the charity to some extent.

Scott, please don't have the “what did I do wrong” feeling. Sometimes in life how ever hard we try, these things happen. I hope that Bert makes a speedy recovery, regards Dan.

I only wish the charities will of had full bloods done on each bird they have, unfortunately this is not the case with most charities, but its not the time to get onto that subject, I just wish Bert will recover and be back home with you soon. I know you have looked after him very well so do not think you have done any thing wrong, this is a problem that has slowly got so bad over years and not in the short time you have had him.
