Baby macaw need little help please

My new addition, JoeJoe, is not that fond of veggies, but if he’s in the kitchen when he’s sitting on a stand I might give him a whole Brussels Sprout, or some broccoli or a French bean while I’m preparing food, and he’ll eat them! I tried giving him some rocket a few days ago and he ate that too! Maybe it’s the novelty of being in the kitchen and attention from me? Try different things with her.

There are a few veggies that Jardine Jessie will often ignore if they are in her food bowl, but she will eat them if I offer them to her by hand. I've always assumed that food offered by a "chosen one" / friend has more value. I always introduce new foods to her in this way, rather than just putting it in her food bowl. Sometimes she accepts it long-term, sometimes not, but at least she tries it.

Dora is the same and will eat carrot, sweet potato, sprouts etc when I'm preparing food but not if it's in her dish. Peas from the pod or the seed core from peppers or chillies are another matter and she'll eat those anywhere. Cooked veggies like broad beans (have to put some aside with no salt) are pinched from our plates.

Be careful of broad beans… they can cause acute hemolytic anemia in some humans (where the red corpuscles break down). It might happen with some parrots too, so better to err on the side of caution.

Hi all

happy new year !!

I have some good news!!! She’s fully on pellets now and gets seeds as a treat!!!

I give her Harrison’s pellets - pepper - with a slice of apple- banana - orange at times

Her bowl is full of food at all times so it’s choice when to eat

today to noticed the bottom of her beak doesn’t look normal- is this part of growing up or is she injured? Do I take her vet?

another question regarding moulting - her pin feathers are coming through tick and fast..: I have been glancing off the white bits and leaving alone the dark blue bits as it looks like it hurts her if touched

thanks again guys!

Beak looks ok to me too. Yes, leave the dark blue pins alone as they are still full of blood.

That’s great you have converted her to Harrison’s pellets. Try if you can to keep offering lots of brightly coloured veggies and fruit as there is nothing to beat natural vitamins and minerals.

Glad all is going well. 😊

the beak is slightly damaged but the beak was getting ready to flake any way, I can tell this by the greyness of the new layer of beak that is now showing, nothing to worry about, if the old layer of beak fell off by its self it would be black and shinny. this is a common thing to happen as your bird catches its tips of the beak on the cage or other hard things as the layer is weekend it will come apart leaving the new layer showing greyish.

Hi all

Thank you for such quick reply to mind my mind at ease !!

I assumed it was due to her beak growing / regrowing so Yh glad to know there isn’t any thing to worry about

Although she’s had her wings clipped I’m doing some indoor flying with her https://youtube.com/shorts/1KEjZfPqN5Q?feature=share

She doesn’t always come unless there is some seeds or peanut at the end of it for her hehe.

Is there anything I can do to her room to make it better for her? She has tones of toys that keeps getting swapped changed around - I’m finding she’s always wanting to be on me and massages hehe which I don’t mind :)

Just be very careful about the blue part as you don't want a bleed - it is difficult to stop bleeding from a blood feather. I would be inclined to leave the white part alone if the base still has a lot of blue, but you will probably be able to make a good decision with each feather. If in doubt err on the side of caution.

hi, can't really add anything to the good advice already given except... ref the Harrisons pepper pellets, it's great that she's eating those, but I think that the high potency ones may be worth considering as they are designed for macaws and their diet requirement. It all depends on what else you're giving her, still veg etc.. to supplement her pellets. Also regardless of what the packaging recommends for qty, figure that out yourself by weighing her regularly. Our female bg is usually about 1.1kg as a rough guide. The guides on the bag were far too much for ours to eat along with their fresh food and they were getting too heavy haha. They have 10 HP pellets, 5 power treats and 5 pine nuts for breakfast in a foraging box. their evening meal is 6 HP pellets with veg in their food bowl. Over the day they'll have a couple of large nuts in shell and maybe eg a couple of grapes or half apple sometimes.

hi hope hope everyone is well....
i have come back as i need some more help....

everything was going great and smooth sailing until 2 days ago... her behaviour has changed so sudden... (Shes molting not sure if that is causing this)

our daily routine which was working fine.... (if this is wrong please tell me so i can make adjustments)

shes let out of her cage at around 8am -- at around 10-11am i go in there and do some indoor flight training harness training and overall fun and games until 3-4pm... then she would be alone and would go in her cage to sleep until 8am the next day

around 8-9 pm i used to go in and close her cage with no problems...

recently past 2 days AS SOON AS i leave the room the squaks with demonic voices... she seems angry- shes not biting me but definitely more angry...

9am she starts screaming top of her voice.... beakaboo and squaking...

me closing the cage was not a problem before she used to sit inside and allow me to close the cage now as soon as i open her bedroom door she jumps out right away and when i put her inside her cage she squaks for a good 2-3 min....

i have uploaded a short video of her screams.... P.S sorry for the messy room tomorrow is cleaning day....

she has loads of toys -- honestly im so upset writing this right now thinking that she might not be happy :(

all she wants to do is be on me and my shoulder 24/7....

any feedback / advice would appreciated

Roz and MIchael will know more, but I think it is important not to reinforce the unwanted behaviours. It's obviously a dramatic change and a concern but as it's new and not yet ingrained I should try not to worry too much as I'm sure it can be resolved.

I would say she's alone parrots are flock species they are prey species nature says be in a flock for safety so regardless of having toys and regardless of what is logical to you she still wants company
Think of it this way if yelling gets your attention then way not!I

When you leave her in the room is the room quiet? Both of mine IRN don’t like quiet so we usually leave some music playing for them or whistling tutorials… and how many toys she has in her cage? Does she has any forging toys? One of mine IRN doesn’t like being in cage because she is not great about entertaining herself and she has lots of toys but she has no interest in some of them and in general thing which work for her is foot toys so on the bottom of her cage she has grapevine branch and small container with various toys parts, she likes to chew them and happily throws them around, she likes forging toys but it must be easy ones while our other one is fine with more complicated things.

I too agree with what has already been said. Does she go other places apart from that room? She may have a lot of toys but does she play with them? Maybe part of your time with her should be to teach her to play independently. Are you allowed to hang things from the ceiling like cargo nets or spring swings etc? Agree with Wera in leaving the radio on for company when you are not there (that’s what I do too)… you could leave it on a timer if you are not there to put her to bed.

hi all- @DizzyBlue @Wera @dianaT @Roz
Firstly, thank you for taking the time out of your day to help out!
i spent until 5am researching and woke up 8am to make sure she was okay -

ive made some slight changes-

brought a wireless radio but for now i put on songs on youtube from a mobile when i leave more than 5-10 min....

spent 8am---5.30pm with her and didnt let her sit on my shoulder most of the time and kept putting her on the floor she eventually got the hint and started playing with her toys

the screams made me think shes hurt or depressed i dont mind her screaming if hes just calling for me but if shes going through anxiety then its not good -

right now she has her own room and can come to the hallway not the bed room or living room mainly because shes not yet potty trained and decides to her her business anywhere she wants

she goes inside her cage to sleep but jumps right now when i go to close the cage- im worried se might come out of her cage at night and hurt her self... does anyone else leave their cage open 24/7?

this is my property i can do what i wish to it - however the plan is to buy a house in 6 months time and rent this one out so she can have a bigger room and a netted garden

^^^^ i have uploaded her room - PLEASE let me know what i can change to it better for her.. thinking of removing play stand and putting a java tree there instead!

Potty trained ...... that's an easy one ..... birds go to toilet about every 10 to 15 minutes during waking hours.
So time the poops. Wait or the poop in the cage get a treat come out wander around return to the places she's allowed to go to toilet ie newspaper or flies to a particular stand like a perch in the living room poop and treat, timing is your job...
Clicker training works just fine if you prefer, mine just fly to cage and poop by themselves now without the need for a treat its so natural for them now.
Other thing is get a packet of poop of wipes makes lie easier for cleaning the accidents up.
We bring the birds in to our homes its up to us to accommodate their requirements.
