Any one made their own cage ?

So wanted a new cage for Bert but just not happy with what im finding or seeing, so the plan is to make him a stainless cage.

I'll roughly copy a "known" maker but adapt to my liking.

Anyone done this before ? might need a little advise on the basics, bar thickness and such ?

Hubby made one many years ago but it was so flipping heavy goodness knows what he used. Haven't got any photos. It did well and went on to provide a quiet space for a broody chicken at one time.

lol ive just designed one and it weighs a little under half a ton ......:risas3:

Think im going overboard with the thickness of material :no idea:

i'll try again, if any one has a stainless cage would they tell me what thickness the bars are ?

I wouldn't bother personally, and if I was going to I would do aluminium frame with stainless steels mesh. But it will never have the nice easy clean powder coated finish like a bought one.

yes i did think that but i'm currently learning to weld stainless and thought it would be a great project and end result is a purpose build stainless cage, exactly how i want it, that will probably outlive me.

i been looking at cages and so many just have little things that don't work or won't fit my room and material wise its around £250/£300 for a 1500h x 1500w x 1000 deep cage with play top, which is a decent size.

i must admit the finish is the only area which is worrying me, i cant control or even know what it will end up like, i've never seen a stainless cage, so have no real idea of the finish.

is stainless not an easy clean then on cages ?

I wish they still sold SS cages in the UK. This is Kobe's SS cage to give you an idea of the finish:

And yes, I much prefer them. They are easy to clean. I'll measure the bar thickness in mm for you tomorrow, but according to this website, they are 3/16th of an inch which is ok for a CAG in my opinion: https://www.birdiecages.com/product/avian-adventures-mediana-play-top-bird-cage/

Hi, thank you that’s really nice and almost how I’d planned to make one, basically going to steal good aid was from lots a cages and the end result would be something like this.

3/16 is just below 5mm which does seem extreme but it’s hard to tell, so knowing yours would be fantastic, I was thinking 3mm but again just no idea.

Stainless comes in loads of different grades and loads of different hardnesses. It's also difficult to weld
Yes, I’m going prob with 314 which is food grade, but 304 is so much cheaper, I’ll have to take a look and see which is best.
Welding wise I know it’s a pain but as im learning it, I may as well give it a shot.

Thanks the plan is to make the bars the same as a normal cage with 20mm spacing, flat top with tray and play gym like yours, also with UV light brackets/holder mounts and cable trays, single main door type thing

They don't make good cages anymore, most cages are made to last 3 to 5 years then they want you to buy another one. If you do want a fancy cage that will last they are like £1500+ because you are paying for good quality metals that will last. I use to do a fair bit of welding and found welding high quality stainless is more of a art than normal steel welding. You need to be really careful with grinding or using hammers, wire brushes etc as using these on or even near SS can cause or transfer carbon dust which will make your SS rust !! You should have a completely separate work area and tools for SS work.

Hi thank you, that’s great info, I’m only working with SS so hopefully no transfer but it’s still great info to throw in the mix.

I have no deadline for this or even a need, just a project

So I’m still learning, been practising on scrap stainless and decided to try 3mm bar as that’s what I’ll make his cage from.

not perfect but as a first attempt and in under an hour or so I’m quite happy.

everything made by me, it’s around 75mm wide x 125mm tall, all comes apart for cleaning, going to wash it a few times and see if it rusts but hey it’s a veg cage.
