I’ve seen a few threads about these, we’re e getting one ASAP, CAG Should be here soon (no firm date)!would you post links to any proven ones you have.

I’ve seen quite a few used, money is tight for now as we’re getting a lot of other stuff.

If I go used, (there’s a few near me, only a few months old)

I assume I need a true hepa, no ioniser ?
I’m happy to get something plenty large enough for our room, I’ll aim for double)

any other things it should have or more importantly shouldn’t have ?

I have a Bionaire air purifier, bought it long time ago from Argos, still works well.

No, I think they have been updated now, I suggest you Google the Bionaire air purifiers and see what comes up. You may find something in the sales.

Mind I don't have a Grey any more only Senegals, Moustached Parakeets and Ammie, they do not produce dust like Grey and Cockatoos do.

I have a 3M one which I think is discontinued. It is a floor standing one and I got this with one 'too. Have a look at the prices of the replacement filters as these prices need to be factored in. The Dyson replacement is £80 for example. Scarletts sell an air filter have a look at that as well as any review.

PS if you find a working 3M FAP 02 or 03 second hand then that could be good? But buy a bunch of new filters (just in case). Just seen one £15!!

All my purifier's are old, picked them up at boot sales from £5-20 non have ionisers, the filters I have bought in rolls and just cut to size, I think I will tag @DizzyBlue to see what her opinion will be, if no answer I will look into the subject and try to get more information if or how it will affect parrots.

A little while back I visited Scarletts with other members, I took my ringneck Beryl with me whom was a free flyer, whilst there one of the companies had Beryl posing on there Purifier so they could use it for advertising. I do not think that either Scarlet or Garden feathers would sell something that is not safe for our birds. the uv light is inside the machine so I will not think that is a danger. have you tried phoning Scarletts and ask them? they are very nice people and will let you know if they have had any issues

I have the heaven fresh 3800 purifier bought from Scarletts and had the same concerns about ionisers - Scarlett also reassured me that her vet had said the levels of ozone emitted were too low to be of concern and that they used the same models with their own birds and had never had any problems. To be honest I played it safe and bought the model with a remote control that allows you to turn off the ionizing function (3800-A, I think). But the ionizing function comes on automatically every time you switch the unit on and there have been several times I've forgotten to use the remote to turn it off again before leaving for work with no obvious effect on my two conures!

Unfortunately this is the only air purifier I've any experience of so can't say how it compares, especially as my conures aren't very dusty, but the build quality doesn't seem the best and cleaning the various filters and grids is always a bit tense given that the clips that hold the front on are very flimsy and feel one wrong squeeze from breaking. Changing the UV bulb is also a nightmare - I broke an old bulb getting it out, so thought I'd get my extremely DIY capable dad to put the new one in and that didn't survive either! And the replacement bulbs and filters are not cheap either, though the HEPA filter doesn't need changing as often as some models due to the prefilters. Hope that helps!

(Fair play to it though, it has survived being chewed on by conures, which is more than a lot things in this room can say!)

It's the ozone emitted from ionisers that is the problem. The Heaven Fresh air purifiers that Scarlett sells has next to no ozone so are safe. I know because I did a fair bit of research on them some years ago. I have had 2 x Heaven Fresh air purifiers for about 11 or 12 years and recently bought a Levoit (which is way too powerful for the room), to replace one of them, but also has no ozone to talk about. It is definitely a good idea to get an air purifer with a Grey about.... maybe a small one to start with and later you can get a larger one if necessary.

I used to have one of the heaven fresh ones and I remember turning off the ionizer.

The newest one I got was off Amazon and again I just turn off the ionizer on it.

I think a lot of the newer models these days are likely to come with the ionizer function.

How do u fond the Levoit one? I looked them up and the one with true HEPA looks good and the price isn't terrible either.

This is the one I have and researched:

Ozone Output: Less than 1 part per billion at 2" away from unit (UL standard is <50ppb)

Just looking at some more modern models - one of them says there is an option to have ozone as off or on.

The Levoit I got is too powerful for the room. I got the big round one. Would have been better getting the smaller square one. It has to be sited away from walls which is a pain. I do like it though - you don't have to keep washing the filter/grid as you do in the Heaven Fresh. But the replacement filter is expensive. I have cheated and vacuum it every now and again to make it last twice as long.

The reason why I didn't get another Heaven Fresh is that the sensor didn't seem to be accurate after a while (this was the old model). They were fine in that I just kept them on silent or low anyway (not on auto setting). Maybe they have resolved this problem on the newer models. The UV light on the Heaven Fresh was annoying at night, so I put a huge blob of blue tack over it!

I did find one of these locally, unopened but second hand, could find a lot about them, are they ok ?
Ours has been great, we have had it for about 3 years, the humidifier can be set to regulate the air, or not used at all. The filters are easy to remove and vacuum too. The only gripe I would have is that you can't remove (officially!) the grill at the top to clean the fan roller. We just run it and spray F10 disinfectant in it every now and again though.

Hah, I have exactly the same issue with mine bought in 2018, the models don't seem to have changed much! My sensor also seemed to start happily doing its own thing after about 3 months of use, but I also didn't ever use the Auto setting so it doesn't really affect functionality much. Just have to remember not be alarmed by the air quality indicators telling me pollution is high! The sensor can be cleaned but only by disassembling half the unit and removing the sensor and disassembling it in turn then cleaning with a cotton bud, which is far too much faff for me. If you need a screwdriver for routine cleaning that's a bit of a mark against user friendliness imo.

Must say I do really like how quiet it is compared to dehumidifiers I've had over the years. And I liked the peace of mind of knowing lots of other bird owners used it and recommended it safety wise.

I bought a cheap one and just found out the filters are silly and to be honest its Not great

so im looking for another.

Anyone have anything else to add or maybe picked up one in the last year they think is good ?

I bought one of these:

You can turn off the functions you don't want and change the settings on it.
Only issue I've had with mine so far is that it doesn't tell you the filter inside comes in a bag inside the unit, the only set up instructions I got were pretty much plug in and turn on, so it stayed that way until I got the sign to change the filter and opened it up to find the filter still wrapped 🙄
