Advice needed on a new BFA

I am a new member so Hello and Happy New Year.

Our beautiful BFA ‘Dolly’ died suddenly last June, she was just 25 and had always been a healthy bird. I am still devastated by the loss and will never forget my little girl but have now decided its time to look for another bird.

We, my husband and myself, want another BFA female but the market seems to be a minefield of scammers. Any advice on a recommended breeder or pet shop would be most welcome.

:welcome: my heart goes out to you as Tommy my BFA passed away last year aged 37 Plus one of our Moustached Parakeets Squeaky aged 27. Although we still have 4 parrots they do leave a hole in the heart that's for sure.

Unfortunately there are plenty of Scammers abut as you know. Best advice I can offer is to look under the thread on here Breeding and Babies where a long time member @lockey mentions birds he breeds and may know of someone breeding BFAs. Also there is http://www.barrettwatsonparrots.co.uk/ who you may like to contact via his details on his website, he also may be able to help and advise. Then there is the Parrot Society UK who produce a monthly mag where UK breeders advertise, you can find more details if you google them.

Also your avian vet may be able to help too.

Of course there are many many birds including plenty of BFA in various rescues needing good homes, often their loved one has passed away a/or had to move home so end up needing new loving caring homes. The forums policy is not give out names of rescues.

I hope this helps a little.

Sorry to hear about your birds, we never would have realised how much loosing a bird could hurt so much.

We did contact Barret Watson last year but he only had a DYH, drew a blank with the Parrot Society also. There are a couple of hand reared baby BFAs for sale at a pet shop called Exotic Feathers listed on Preloved site Gorgeous Hand Reared Blue Fronted Amazon Parrots For Sale For Sale in Manchester, Lancashire | Preloved . They look lovely birds but at £2400 each seem a bit expensive! We live a long way off grid, so to go and look at a bird is nearly a day's journey each way. We have also looked at several of the Parrot Rescue organisations but have our hearts set on another baby bird.

Sorry for your loss, they are with us for such a long time and it doesn't get any easier.
Ok a few things to consider do you really want another BFA that you will compare to Dolly? Mabe a different Amazon ie yellow crown, Double yellow head etc or a completely different species altogether?
That said if you have your heart set on another BFA we breed some beautiful bolivian blue fronts with alot of yellow in them.
Either way do NOT send any money without seeing the bird even if it means driving 3 or 4 hours, last year we had a customer scammed twice because he didn't want to drive the 7 hour round trip to view our babies..
In the end he drove down collected his bird and is over the moon and now trusts us to courier the baby he has ordered for this year.
Good Luck
Dave

Thank you. We would consider a Yellow Crown or even a Yellow Nape but my husband would like another BFA after he took to one particular bird (and vice versa) at Friskney Parrot Rescue last year. Would never buy without seeing the bird and ensuring it was at ease with us. Although we currently live a long way off grid and will have more like a 10 hour journey each way to see any bird. We are prepared to do this for the right bird.

There is a lot of scammers out there and a few on preloved Iwhen I was looking at parrots last summer a lot wanted a deposit before even letting me view the bird I was very suspicious and ended contact I was looking for a bfa I eventually got an owa from a private seller traveled about 3 hours each way viewed the bird in house etc and all good 4 months on and me and biko and family all happy be careful Christine

If you need anybody to vouch for Lockey (Dave) then I will he's real not a scammer and unfortunately for him I know him and have met him, his wife, his mum and his dad several times :risas3:
you live in a stunning location that is Sooooo beautiful!
@ChristineW

So sorry for the loss of your stunning Dolly. I lost my beloved Orange-wing Amazon, Ollie a year ago so can empathise. I still talk to him daily. Like you I decided to take in another - an Orange-wing, in my case. JoeJoe arrived in October. I hope you can find the right Amazon who can enjoy that stunning view with you.

Sorry to hear about Ollie. We also think about Dolly every day and miss her so much.

We are still looking for another Amazon, when do you expect to have some Bolivian BFAs ready?

@ChristineW get a female if you can
I own two male amazon's both are rehomes I took on knowing males can be stroppy to say the least when adult and in breeding mode
I have a BFA and a DYH temperament wise when adults they can get aggressive they are classed as "Hot Zons" of which there are three species in this classification.
I have two of the three ... I must be suicidal!
My DYH is lets just say unpredictable and wired he likes me but that hasn't stopped him really nailing me.
My BFA will try and kill anybody who even looked at me sides ways talk about protective of me is an understatement. I can do anything with him but wouldn't allow him to be out of cage if anybody else came to the house so likely not too good if you needed him to bond with more than one person. Females are a totally different kettle of fish.

Thanks, we have been warned about BFA males! Dolly could also get in a mood at breeding time but she was always so soft with me, I could do anything with her. However, if she was out in 'Her Room' Her territory! and my husband walked in, that was a different matter. She was also very two faced, if I was not about, Dolly would always pester my husband for a stroke and would be very soft until I walked in.. Then it was all his fault, 'honest Mum it was him, I wasn't two timing you! She also never refused a food treat from him.

Alfie goes in to kill everything that moves if I am in the room regardless of breeding time so he is only ever out exercising when all the others are locked up and have a cover on them he is a total baby with me but 75% assassin if anybody is in my vicinity be it human or bird. If someone comes in to my home and he's locked up and they come to stand near me he physically throws himself at the cage bars like a screaming wild banshee  some people own a guard dog and some of us have ninja attack parrots for protection :risas3:

When I did Keeper for a Day at Flamingo Land in the days of the old Bird Walk, the only parrots I was not allowed in with were the Blue-fronts as the male was so aggressive.
