A New Orange Wing Amazon

:welcome: All good advice given. I am so sorry you dear Amazon has been so roughly treated, and as for wing clipping that is cruel and unkind as many would agree.
As has been said an avian vet check up should be high on your list, the ring is a split ring. You would be wise to have your bird micro chipped as it is your form of i.d. for her/him. Perhaps your avian vet would like to see the leg ring too.
Do let us know how you get on and keep us up to date with photos when you can.
You are going to need a lot of time, love and patience and reassurance you are not scary and will not harm her.

Hi and welcome to the forum
Sounds more like you have an aviary bird rather than a pet bird. Split ring these days are usually popped on aviary birds rather than pet ones and it is possible that he/she has bent it and caused the swelling. Usually split rings are steel not aluminium. Either which way pop to the vets get a health check done.
Training wise am sure we can help you get a bond going with your bird even if it is an aviary bird so long as it really is a youngster. We have a couple of peeps on here that have parent reared birds and have excellent bonds with them and have built up trust with their birds an a proper friendship. The burden of if it can be done lays with the human rather than the bird. The are you make of stern stuff and have you got heaps of love and patience, the wish to learn and study the bird? The will to learn their ways and the body signals at times compromise and even on the worse days remember that tomorrow is another day … a do over day?
Our member Roz is flipping awesome with training. But first things first … book an appointment with a good avian vet get your bird checked out and then onwards and upwards.

Ive rang chine house vets that is supposed to be experts in aviary, falconry and parrots, got in for Thursday morning the earliest appointment they had.. So i guess i will have to take it from there..
I called her FLO, as my grandad used to call me that name because i was his full time carer (florence nightingale) he passed away last month.
Thankyou so much for replying it means alot as i was concerned my heart ruled my head....
IF it does turn out she is ill or has problems, then ill take it further with the shop, i dont want this keep happening to other potential buyers..

Hi @helen786 welcome hun. Just to commiserate with you, I purchased a Rose Breasted 'too last year, shop told me she was two, her ring said eleven and thanks to some great people I have been able to definitely confirm she is eleven. Got told a cock and bull story. Rubes was in a state I could see, found her cholesterol levels to be high and she has a heart murmur. They had butchered her wing feathers. I like you was very angry. The shop offered eventually on production of the vets test results to take her back, refund on the price of the bird but no recompense for the vets costs. I was still livid but loved this little one and she was not going back to their death diet. It is evident that she has had a chequered life but she is home now, safe and loved and not going anywhere. I hope that you can love the poor thing that has crossed your path hun? I should have taken this case further tbh, but having recently lost a precious boy and this little girl needing me I didn't, rightly or wrongly.

You will be in safe hands with Craig at Chine House hun it where I go with mine. :)

Best of luck. With a good diet, patience and kindness most parrots can become tame as long as you take it very slowly. The key is finding their favourite food and using this as a way to associate you with good things. Roz is indeed the master here.

Fresh branches to chew and plenty of gentle misting with warm water are also keys to a happy life.

I'm so sorry to read this story. We were looking for our bird for few months and I came across the pet shop you've bought your bird from. Unfortunatelly the reviews are mostly false, written by people actually working in the shop and the real stories are hidden in the internet, I've searched a lot, because they had a lot of birds claimed to be babies, often talking, always hand tame... Looks like they actually sedate the birds often before announced buyers come, there are many horror stories to be found. I really hope your amazon will calm down and that it is a healthy bird with unfortunate start in life and much better future. Good luck.

I wonder if with known evidence it may be worth someone contacting the licensing department at Birmingham City Council about the way this Pet Shop is run. They quote a licence number in their adverts and website, as if it is something to gain comfort from?????

@LennyS that's just awful that they can carry on with such deception and get away with it. I have read through the rules and guide lines shops have to keep too to be able to sell animals including birds, but it dose not clearly state that the methods they use (if proved) will be against the guide lines, but surly there is a criminal side that they are breaking. How I would love to name and shame such a place. if I was close to Birmingham I will say I would of offered my knowledge to come around and help settle and train your bird. Places like this need to be closed down as it gives the good sellers such a bad name and even it can put off new parrot keeper from taking on birds in the future.

Hi, thankyou for replies, Youve all been so kind and helpful
Im taking her vets in the morning.. I want to get her fully checked out, have blood tests done first, before i can take any action against the shop.. Ive been told Chine house vets is excellent and Craig is brilliant with parrots and birds of all kinds, im just hoping she is healthy enough to get her sorted..
I can see alot of trauma on her wings, especially on the curve (shoulder) and dried blood/scabbing, goodness knows what shes been through, dont think i would like humans either!!
No matter what the outcome, I brought her so shes my responsibility now,and im in it for the long run so ill have to take the rough with the smooth..

That is so good and kind of you hun, I am sure you will be rewarded, birds respond so well to love and kindness. Thinking of you tomorrow :)

.. Her beak is not black and shiny it looks very scratched up like an older bird..

:welcome: Helen and Flo! So sorry you feel like you were dubbed. When you say the beak is black, is it like Ollie's in my avatar (he's an Orange-wing)... ie. two toned, or is the whole beak black? If the whole beak is black she might be a Blue-fronted Amazon. Would love to see a pic of her when you can. That's great you have a vet appointment tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you both!

Males can get stroppy at breeding time females are easier to handle at that time of year.

Nobody would ever dare to come near me if my Alfie is out of his cage especially at breeding time as he'd think nothing of going into killer pitbull attack mode stay away from my mum she's mine!! In this household that is really strong as I am the only human so totally bonded to me as has zero choice lol. That faze passes as breeding time does. Usually last for about two or three weeks once a year.

Never ever be unfair to a blue fronted amazon …. they remember and will even the score at a later date. So if you do something to upset them that they think is totally not their fault and its yours you will get told off for it at some point. Baby Blues start to mimic and talk faster than African greys do not sure why they are as popular as greys lets face it they are as colourful as an explosion in a paint factory :) the colouration blue will intensify in the head area as a youngster gets older will end up as a really stunning bright summer sky blue when older hence the alternative name of turquoise fronted amazon - exactly the same species just more description of the colour blue. Oh and the scientific name (hmm latin name) for your bird is amazona aestival.

They are really really clever too exceptionally sociable errr unless your name is Alfie and your in hormonal meltdown like he will be for the next 10 days lol but he's allowed to be as he still loves me just hates everybody else! My Alfie will use toy parts and construct his own toys the first time I saw him do it I thought I was flipping dreaming! Holding dolly pegs and slotting them on to paper string and winding them together …. mind blowing!

Make sure the diet is kept more tilted towards less fattening things as BFA's can become totally lazy lumps and get over weight and favour getting you to take them somewhere rather than flying there. More fruits and veggies and I feed a mix that has smaller seeds mixed in with it rather than allowing over indulgence in things like peanuts and sunflower seeds, don't get me wrong my flock are all allowed them (human grade ones) but just not is massive amounts. :)

Blue front mushy mode going on over here forget the internal feeling of pink and fluffy I feel blue and feathery :emoji_revolving_hearts:

Yes its a young Blue front, now these are great birds and not as common as the Orange winged, Normally more expensive to buy as well. the beak looks normal although given I think it is still a young bird it will look better given a better diet and as it matures. Fantastic Photo (i'm in love) may be you have gained by there lack of knowledge and care. looks in a reasonable condition so I do not think you will have any long term worries, but wait to get the results back from the tests, and good luck for today, I hope all goes well, I think you both may of landed firmly on your feet (more by luck than that awful place you got it from)

Hi everyone.. wow you lot are amazing!!, YES vet confirm i have a blue fronted amazon, NOT a orange as she was sold to me..
He seems to think shes under 1 years, which is good.. She has a lot of damage to her feathers, they have totally HACKED at all her feather not just the flight feathers, it looks terrible, she has damage where shes been handled appallingly and feathers have been pulled out, or shes been banged against things to try and get away, hence the scabs where they have been bleeding.. The vet says its more concerning with her psychological damage. She was shaking, and trembling while being examined and making an awful noise... The vet was brilliant with her though ..
I was amazed when i got home i managed after 10 minutes of asking her to step up on a perch out of the carrier so i could get her in the cage (as i dont want to keep towelling her as she get so frightened) and she did it!!!, so i am hoping i am gaining a little trust.. ( unless shes bidding her time to get her own back for taking her vet!!..lols)

Thankyou everyone, you have all been so kind and helpful.xx
