A New Orange Wing Amazon

Hello, I brought a orange wing amazon on Sunday.. I brought it from a shop in Birmingham.. At the time they convinced me that they had to take the parrots ring off because it had become to small.. Does this happen? They gave me the ring and i have it here.. I have now noticed that her legs seem to be very chubby and swollen.. Do amazons suffer with leg problems, as i haven't come across this. Although it concerns me it could be bumble foot...
They told me at the time is was 5 1/2 months old...The age on the ring states 2018 and the lady in the shop said she was born 0ct... But this could of been any birds ring, so I am now having terrible doubts.. Is there a way of checking her age?.. Her beak is not black and shiny it looks very scratched up like an older bird.. She is very, very aggressive from fear, she is so frightened of me anyone.. If i go near the cage shes flapping around and growling.. If i cover her cage at night and she see the blanket she totally freaks out, im starting to wondering if shes been toweled handled.. She is eating and drinking ok..
I know this is going to be a long confidence and trust building, im far from even attempting to put my hand in the cage as i went to put i toy in the cage and she was so frightened at me..
I guess i found your forum because i am hoping for some help and advice on where to start with such a fearful amazon
I have never experienced a parrot so fearful of people, its so heart breaking
thankyou

Do you have a picture of your little one and did you watch them remove the leg ring? Likewise do you have a picture of the ring and the birds legs?

It's possible that the ring was too tight however I would have expected them to have it removed sooner if it was causing issues.
Is the bird you have the same one as was for sale? Ie did they catch it up in front of you?

Hi Helen and :welcome: to the forum.
Oh dear...this doesn’t sound right at all.
Please post the name of the shop, as I am mindful that it maybe one that we have had previous reported issues of.

It isn’t usual for a shop to remove the ring. Is the ring colour coded?

Don’t worry we can help you with building trust with your bird.

Hello and welcome Helen. Captain Howdy Helen will not be able to PM you until she has made 25 posts. Ok no ring (possibly Ring removed shows 2018, there are a few things that make me wonder as how do they know its sex? did it have any paperwork? yes I love to see a photo, I have three OWA's my self

Hi, thankyou for replying.. I will up load a photo asap..
They advertise alot of their birds on pets4homes website.. I have a ring, they handed to me because they said it was too small for the leg..Then because she was so stressed out, Ive left her but when she climbed around the cage to get away, her legs do look very puffy and swollen, especially her left leg.. I did ring them again today to go over the ring and say im concerned shes alot older than what they sold her for ( do not get wrong, if shes older what can i do, its just IF ive been lied to thats frustrating)but they said that the ring was too small and they took it off, and i should take her vets within the 7 days of purchase.. I asked if her age was right and if they had bred her, they said yes..
I guess i can not be sure if its the same birds as advertised, but they did net her when they wanted to get her out the cage in the shop, and then cut her flight feathers as they said it would help to train her..
I knew that she wasent that trained, i understood that.. But ive never come across a amazon that is this frightened and distressed.. Im hoping for some training techniques that will help her come along and not scare her more
Can you determine a amazon age, as ive just read that a 5 month old O.W amazons beak should be black and shiny. This little girl seems to have alot of distress on her beak ( scratches)

Sorry no Tomsmum, i didn't see them remove the ring, they had it in a bag ready for sale of the amazon.. Its a bass colour

I did ask for hatch certificate they said they only do the hatch certificate for there Alexandrines.. Surely if you breed them you would do a hatch certificate or am i wrong??...
Also they said for double the cost they could train her in 7-10 days!!... Ide hate to think how they would train her in such a little amount of time, when i can see just frightened and scared of people she is...

Please ensure you take your little one to am avian vet asap and get some disease work done.

Manor vets in Edgbaston can do in your testing for psittacosis. It's a blood test that they do. I would also advise having the pbfd test done but you may find this cheaper if you get them to take the blood sample for you and sent it off to animal genetics uk - aka avian biotech. You can have a DNA test done at the same time using the same sample.

Is this a physical pet shop or is it someone's house?

No wonder the poor things so stressed so I like to share my thoughts on what you have told us, no reflection on you but I would recommend a quick introductory visit to an avian vet for a full check over and bloods. so they netted her and cut the flight feathers plus as it was them who bred it they put the wrong size ring on the birds leg, so far its just making me fill angry against the shop. i hope we can help you get your bird mo used to you.

So sorry , ive just had another look and its a silver aluminum ring, that you push together yourself..

Ok i will ask you a few questions if you do not mind, have you kept Parrots before? Now in most cases i would recommend a bird to see a avian vet straight away but i am thinking in this case if it will be better to get the bird insured first if you are aiming to give it a forever home, i say this just in case your bird may need some treatment as insurance companies do not normally cover for treatments that have been found or known before the insurance has been taken out.

I totally understand your anger Micheal Reynolds..
Now im totally worried in case shes ill..:emoji_disappointed:
Ill ring the vet in the morning.. The fact they keep telling me to take her before the 7 days has me in doubt about her health anyway..

Yes the ring looks like you push it together with pliers to get it to close...

Ive never had a amazon, ive had a African grey and red-sided eclectus. 20 years ago.. But both were hand tame from the start, one died from cancer and the other is still alive and decided he loved my mum more and hes 25 now and still doesnt like me..lols.... Im aiming to keep her, i would never take her back there,.. They gave me an insurance 30 days thing.. But you are so right i need to insure her..

Defo get her insured asap.
Personally I would not wait to take her the vets, if she is I'll time of the essence in getting her seen and treated. The insurance I use I think has a 2 week initial period where they won't cover if an illness is found. So even if you wait to take the insurance out you'd be waiting another 2 weeks on top to take the vets and then there's a chance they won't cover it as they may class it as existing anyway.
If you have the 30 days free call them up tomorrow and get the insurance started.

You sound like a person with a great heart :thumbsup:Ok take the insurance out asap and before the vet visit, if you use the same insurance company that you have the 30 day insurance with they should just extend the year to account for the thirty day free that you have been given. please promise one thing, you will never get the birds wings clipped again (thank you) it one of my hates and i wish they will bring in a law to stop this practice except on the advice of an avian vet. Ok so its now repair the damage time, getting your bird to get used to you and gaining trust. well at the moment it may take a little while and apart from approaching it slowly and sitting near her gently talking i would not worry too much in settling her down until the vet visit is over. what have you called her?

The old trick saying they can train her in seven days, I can say i can train a bird in an hour and i can but it dose not mean it will be hand tame and friendly. i hate forcing a bird to be close and they have already shown how they work when they have taken away the one defence a bird can have and that is to get away from what it thinks is dangerous. Please do not worry about our recommendations regarding getting your bird tested its as a precautionary measure and allows you to sort out any problems from the start and that includes problems with legs.
