Worlds oldest tracked seabird has returned again to breed with her mate. Wisdom as she is known is an Laysan Albatross.
She laid her egg and is sitting :)

Blimey they do live to a good old age! Good luck with hatching and raising your chicks Wisdom.

@dianaT they have up to an 11ft wing span and when they fledge they fly out to sea and apparently don't return to land for between 5 and 10 years, they reach sexual maturity at the age of 8 or 9 and its a till death do us part relationship a mate for life. They return to nest in the exact same spot each time laying one egg and always with the same partner they wait for each other :) If they loose their partner they wait for two to three years before looking for another.
Totally amazing birds

incubation period .... between 70 and 80 days :copas: that's a heck of a lot of sitting!

I love them too, it's lovely to know that Wisdom is doing so well and breeding so successfully at her age. It does make me wonder how long the average lifespan of these birds is though, and if she is maybe more typical than we previously knew? :)

They are adorable Tash , you mainly see them on wild life programs these days x

wow that's wonderful I had no idea they lived so long blimey, good work Wisdom that's a fair amount of eggs in your lifetime!

awww they were featured on the panet earth II but had no idea they had a life expectancy as long as they had

I saw them when I went whale watching in New Zealand. Didn't see a whale and got seasick but did see a couple of Albatrosses. Lovely majestic birds.

Has anybody heard if Wisdom has returned with her new mate yet?
She has laid a couple of times in consecutive years just wondering if she has appeared yet or if she will be giving this year a miss?!

Heard some lovely news yesterday :emoji_revolving_hearts: thanks Jude @TomsMum

The girl is back!! Wisdom is at home for the holidays and she's already got an egg :aaaaa: Apparently she's been home for a bit as Akeakamai her mate was parked on the nest on 13th December, but I suppose they have to make sure it's Wisdom he's with. Had something happened to her he may have had to find another mate since they pair for life and only choose another if their beloved dies. Anyway they have been home a while before anybody has spotted them, as long as both are back again all that counts.

As most of you have realised both Jude and myself are fans of Wisdom the Albatross and both of us follow her comings and goings and what's new at her nest site.
We haven't up dated this thread for a while.
Jude notified me in February that her chick for 2019 had hatched and was being reared by her and Akeakamai her chosen mate. I just came across a photo of this years chick with dad standing proud keeping an eye on little fluffy bum :) how sweet does this one look
For those interested Akeakamai is Hawaiian and means Lover of Wisdom rather apt they names him this when he paired up with her.
Although have to say that looks to be a bit of discarded rubbish in the nest on the right of the photo and a piece of some kind of twine to the left of the photo :( hope little one doesn't investigate it.
