6 month old aviary bred Indian ringneck

ok your bird can go with out food during the day but never let it go without water, if you bird dose not go in do not chase it, when you leave for work the following day just remove the seed mix leave a little bit of fruit like a slice of apple and a grape, when you get in and are staying in the room put the food back and then watch him. do not do this if you think you will be out for more than ten hours.

there is a little thing that may also help but many will not think of it, the placement of the feed bowl, you should always place it at the back of the cage, so your bird will have to go in to get it. it will give you that little extra time to close the door, if your bird see you coming you have a better chance of it flying to the back of its cage. I always prefer the water to be near the front as it is easy to see if it gets dirty quicker than normal or the bird has used it to bath in you will be able to refill it.

Poor little chap, he has been removed from all his friends and finds himself in such a strange environment, but he has your budgies for company and even if he does not like them at the moment they are there, so he will feel not entirely alone. It will take time but you will get their in the end, time and patience. Michael is knowledgeable about ringnecks.

The water bit made me laugh, Oscar here has his water absolutely filthy in 5 minutes if he has chance, that is normal for him.

His cage has swing out feeders which I use so as I don't have to put my hand in. But fortunately the are at the side of his cage with the far one being quite near the back but I've got them with the food toward the front 😕I'll swap them over.. Never thought of that

If you have a millet spray hang that inside the cage towards the back that could be tempatation he cannot resist - that's if he's had millet before. Maybe give him a little (snip a bit off a spray of millet) and give him that so he gets the taste.

Hi all, just an update as to how things have been going with Foley my ringneck..
Well unfortunately we've made no progress at all, I've been feeding my budgies while they've been on my hand so he can see but even if I move my arm slightly to get comfortable he will panic and flap wildly about in his cage. I'm trying to use the positive reinforcement to approach his cage as in slowly step towards him avoiding eye contact and then take a step back before he panics, sometimes I can do 2 steps other days even if I move from the sofa which is about 12 feet away he will immediately panic. I've tried placing some apple just outside his cage as Michael suggested but he won't go anywhere near it. He still panics and flaps about in his cage when I need to put food in and change his water so I try to do this when he's outside the cage. If I speak to him he also gets ready to panic .. Last Saturday my daughters came around with the grand kids so we had a house full, he was in his cage and I was slightly concerned about how he would be but he never batted an eye lid and sat on his perch attentively watching the kids playing etc.
Maybe it's me he doesn't like?

I suppose my question is.. Is there anything else I should or could be doing or is there anything I'm doing wrong?

@Alan M you have only had him about 2 weeks, it is such a short time for him for to accept his new home which is so different to his past one, they can easily takes months, even years as my Dusky Grey but he was 18 years when he came to me.

@MichaelReynolds What do you think?

Hi Kendra I've had him about 5 weeks now, I know it's going to be a long process with him but if I'm honest he doesn't trust me even a tiniest bit more than he did when he first arrived, was hoping for just a tiny sign from him that we were heading in the right direction

How I would love to meet your bird, ok I do think it may of been a feral bird, they can take around four months to settle in a home environment, carry on what you are doing, you just need to relax and have patients. could the bird be scared of you, yes but he will get over it,

Hi Michael I read a reply that you posted on another thread where you were mentioning the colours on the wing or tail of feral ringnecks, the guy I bought it from still has them for sale with a video, the bird in the video isn't my one but it has the exact same colouring, I'll post the link

No I had to go on trust as I don't drive so he delivered. The original add I saw showed an avery in his garden with 7 or so ringnecks, I asked him how long he's been breeding them, he said he doesn't his father loves them and has been breeding them for 20 years, he seemed genuine gave me his telephone number and even text me after sale to make sure all was OK with Foley

Hi all just a quick update,
I leave his cage door open permanently now and he spends a lot of time on top of his cage and goes in himself when it begins to get dark. He seems to be getting a little more confident and will come to the front of his cage and sit and watch now instead of hiding at the back.. He still doesn't like his food or water changed and will flap widely about. I noticed that at meal times he will come to the very fron of his cage and watch us eat 😂.. So as Michael suggested in an earlier post I made a form of t perch on a stand (my d. I. Y skills are non existant) and placed it just outside his cage, when we eat I put some apple or carrot or seed in his bowl and after a couple of minutes he comes onto the t perch and joins us for a meal. I'll give it a week and move the perch slightly further away. Seems like we are making a little bit of progress 😁 couldn't get a better picture at the mo.. But he is outside on his perch about to join us for dinner 😂IMG-20191107-WA0015.jpg
