Hi everyone,

Just wanted to know if this type of mesh would be safe for greys and Hahns Macaws?

I am just looking at different options for an Summer Aviary and have seen this on several pages.

Apologies this is in the wrong section. Hopefully someone will be able to move it into the right place ;)

The process of galvanisation is of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron, to prevent rusting.
Zinc is a heavy metal and poisonous to many animals if ingested.
Parrots species as they use their beaks to climb so the wire will be "mouthed" by them. Suggest you rethink the mesh your thinking of using.

@Michael Reynolds you CANNOT neutralise zinc with anything.
Zinc is poisonous to parrots full stop and end of flipping story!
Vinegar or preferably apple cider vinegar is used to neutralise and clean off any residual of the chemical process on aluminium

Definitely. @DizzyBlue has bought me upto speed with all of it. Thank you all. I wanted to use it on the floor to stop any rodents lol but ill be on the safe side now.

Its always good to know i have you geniuses to ask about anything parrot related....[emoji855] just keep learning every day haha

Iv had a look on Avifabs and Rosemeads. Avifabs much cheaper for the bigger size so going with them hopefully. I already have a lovely aluminium cage outside....but wanted to make it much bigger to give space to all birds...and let them fly freely.

Still got abit of research to do on a good sized shed for the 4 aviary ringnecks i have.

Your aviary needs to last you as long as possible so build it well and don't scrimp if you cannot afford to do it all in one then save up don't rush it. Far better to invest your money wisely and get the best result for your birds and yourself than do a rush job and wish you had taken more time. Hind sight is a strange thing ….

I searched on the forum and think it was back in 2016 when i read it was galvanised....was the reason why i thought it was okay at first lol [emoji23] @Heather2131

Sorry I did mean to say apple cider I stand corrected it is quite often used on the outside of a double layered aviary to keep the birds secure from predators as it is a cheaper option.

That confirms it all for me … I am obviously just a complete nerd when it comes to my birdies :BangHead: I so seriously just need to get a freaking life!!
Perhaps I am the only person that feels the need to go off on a tangent reading such things as how aluminium mesh and other stuff is made :watchout: .… :confundio1:
Right for those who now feel the need to read a bit about how aluminium mesh is made ….. here's a link … a really boring one that explains how aluminium is created … right from dragging it out of a rock pouring it as a slurry format and then crystallising it blah bah blah …. http://www.madehow.com/Volume-5/Aluminum.html
off to eat heaps of chocolate and boil my head in a fridge ….. and watch the video again I found the other day of a spaghetti making machine … the Dolly Mini P3 - Pasta Machine if it didn't have Teflon as a component I would have to have one just to watch the mesmerising way it does those swirly ones near the end of the video …. weird but mesmerising!
