    Thumpers First Vet Visit

Yes. The vet is a big fan of extruded pellets, formed without heat. I've used the pellets from the last company he owned. He says many bird issues stem from poor diet. No doubt he sees the end result of poor diet daily. The new pellets look different but most of the birds took to them...

Ill get some pix online later. Theres NO SEED AT ALL. The mix has lots of dried corn and fruits together with about 50% pellets. I tasted one, no particular flavour. This mix is meant to comprise 60% of the diet ( according to the handout). The balance to be made up of Fruit and Veggies...

    Wasting food

May I offer a caique suggestion? - since I know nothing about cockatoos. Find out what hand rearing food he was on and have your partner - ONLY -  offer it to him daily in the evenings Often with birds, you CAN buy affection

    Choosing a first parrot

Agree with Michael, the laws are onerous but necessary to keep your own native species alive. In South Africa where I live, we are currently fighting to save the rhino, since 500 million chinese men believe that its horn ( made of the same material as a birds beak) has magical sexual properties...

    Caique food?

    Caique food?

agreed Pally. of course the amount of nuts and sunflower seed you give is dependent on the amount of exercise your birds get.  I bought a caique a few years ago which quickly died, Autopsy showed fatty liver from sunflower seeds from the previous owner. So I am well aware of the dangers. Most...

    Advice needed

How do you feel about ants and flying insects in your home? These can be drawn by the amount of food thrown down by parrots for the lower dwelling creatures - in our case ants and bugs which can multiply. ( do you have carpets?). You know you can never use an insecticide near the birds, so you...

    Worried about red eye...

Look everything is possible. But...I have 8 crazy wrestling caiques living in an avairy and another 3 loonies in my bedroom and I've never seen a 'banged eye'. And I must have refereed  50 active spinning grappling all over the show wrestling matches. I was at the clothes line yesterday, looking...

    Worried about red eye...

The skin around the eye can vary in colour from grey/whitish to pure black. This is down to genetics and exposure to sunlight. red or pink is not normal.  an allergic reaction of some sort? He needs to see a vet, ASAP.

    Worried about red eye...

Ok ,the dark pupil is normal. The bright red ring surrounding the pupil is normal in an angry or very excited bird, and only temporarily.   BOTH eyes should be affected. Plus it should be accompanied by other angry signs, upright or lunging posture, fluffy angry pants etc. I dont see those...
