Hi, newbie here.

Currently birdless but hopefully that will change in the not too distant future. I’ve had birds previously, a pair of beautiful (but totally untame) rosellas, some zebra finches and copious chickens both normal sized and bantams and now in the position to be able to get a new feathered companion so I’m busy searching for reputable breeders and getting everything together to have the right set up before I bring a parrot home.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone and learning everything I can from the forums here :)

Welcome Jen. Good luck with your research and preparations. Do you have any particular species in mind?

Andrew

Thanks everyone

I’m looking for a mini macaw, ideally an Illigers although they seem to be hard to find, I just love the little macaws though so I’m open to any of the little guys.

I work from home so I’m here all day to provide company and attention and we have plenty of space to fly about. It would be nice to have a bird that wants to interact and have that companionship but equally I’ve had birds that were totally uninterested in me and unhandleable and they’re still amazing and wonderful in their own way.

Do have a look at this website http://www.barrettwatsonparrots.co.uk/ he may have what you are looking for or be able to point you in the right direction, also the Parrot Society UK they publish a monthly mag where UK breeders advertise.
There are so many birds in various rescues too who need good homes but it's the forums policy not to recommend any particular rescues.
Good luck.

It's really good that you don't have unrealistic expectations of the bird that you end up with, and are happy to allow he/she to be as interactive as they feel comfortable with.

Thanks dianaT, I have signed up to the parrot society so I’m impatiently waiting for my magazines to arrive, I did look at the Barrett Watson site but they seemed to only have the larger macaws, I will send a message though, no harm in trying :)

I have tried looking for rescues around my area but we don’t seem to have many that have birds for adoption, they mostly seem to be sanctuary type places that will take in birds but don’t then re-home them. I have reached out to a couple of people looking to sell their older birds though so we will see what happens, I’m always wary of scammers so I’m trying to be careful with my searches and asking lots of questions as I go.

Thanks Wendy, I’m just really looking forward to sharing my home with a bird again and I want to provide the best home that I can to make them as happy as possible :)

Hi and welcome
Becks Bird Barn is another reputable place well worth consideration.

My experience of the mini macaws is limited to seeing them in zoos and bird parks, but I do like them. My favourite is probably the Yellow-collared, but I do like Illiger's as well. Good luck in finding one. My Parrot Society magazine arrived today so hopefully yours will not be far behind. To be going on with, here's an Illiger's I photographed at Paradise Park a few years ago...2021 Illiger's Macaw.jpg

Thanks, I’ll have to pop in next time I’m over that way as I have some family not too far from Shrewsbury :)

Great picture! Such a cutie, I hope I don’t have to wait too long to find one of my own

I didn't breed them, but I had two tame ones when I was a lot younger. I kept them in an aviary eventually. Hahn's are really lovely birds, very playful and intelligent, and not too hard to get hold of even these days. Be warned though, they are very noisy indeed. I actually found their calls fine (albeit loud), but my parents couldn't stand it! They love to climb and chew on branches, which I would count as a positive as it's easy to keep them entertained in this way.

:welcome: Jen! Hope you find your mini Macaw. @Oli Fry used to breed Hahn’s Macaws. :)

Thanks Roz :)

Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge, your Hahns sound like they were great little parrots.

Noise wise it’s only really me here in the day time so no one else about to get annoyed :D
I’ve heard the wood chewing tip from a few people so I’m planning loads of chew toys, a nice big play stand and foraging opportunities to help keep the future bird entertained

Sorry Oli, I remembered wrong.

Thanks Roz :)

My pleasure. Yes, 'great little parrots' would be my assessment too! Mine were both parent-reared, by the way, and became tame very quickly. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking a parrot should be hand-reared.
