Step up

Hi,

I have no issues with getting Ollie to step up. He will put his foot out usually to my arm and now a perch as well. Hands on the other hand are a no. When i try he puts his head down so i cant get very close or he will make the noise he makes before he bites. He also lunges for my hand. He doesnt do this with anything else though. Ive tried letting him see the treat and it still doesnt make a difference. I can stroke his beak and ive scratched his head once too a couple of days ago but previously he has lunged at me. Usually hes ok with having his beak stroked if i approach him slowly.

Any ideas on how to get him on there without biting? Preferably like to keep my fingers if possible lol

Okay so its not just hands its skin! He will step up onto my sleeve but was weird with my bare arm and i called him to fly over to me when i had my sleeve up and he did it but moved to my sleeve but if i took my jumper off he wouldnt do it anymore 😮 so now to desensitise him and let him know he can trust my skin 😂 @DizzyBlue can you respond so at least i dont look like such a loser and then maybe others will follow suit 😜 :pancarta: :risas3:

You two are like a comedy double act!

Would think perhaps your little one has perhaps been grabbed hold of at some time with bare hands and thereby associates the hands with a mean act rather than the hands are actually part of you. Tickles are good as we usually tickle their heads with our finger tip and the hand is more often than not closed so not in grab birdie position.

Go have a nosey at Roz's threads the ones that are back to basics for the step up and trouble shooting and also the reinforcer thread as your going to have to show that the hands belong to you and your not going to grab and catch him.

I spoke to his fostet yesterday and she said they would step up onto all of their hands but when i was their i saw him step up onto a cushion with their daughter he didnt particularly like and then on the arm of the one he did like. The only person i saw use their hand was the husband and he did get nipped from what i could see while he was touching him. Ill give it a read. I have a few ideas of things to try so we shall see how we get on. Hes only let me touch his head once and that was a couple days ago. He lunges at me most of the time. He lets me touch his beak. He definitely likes me though cos he follows me around everywhere and will fly to me when he wants to sit with me for a bit. Hes just been like this since i got him. If i show him my hand he is very defensive but with my arm he sticks his foot out 🤔

So today i was doing some recall with Ollie and rolling my sleeve further up each time but he was only landing on the sleeve covered part. Perhaps hes not so confident about being able to get a good grip on my arm... Anyway i rolled my sleeve up past my elbow. Called him over and he bit down on the inside of my elbow. I didnt react at all but my goodness.. it hurt! The pain was going up and down my whole arm and even now my arm hurts trying to get dressed and picking things up 😕 i do not think he meant to do it. I just think it was because he was feeling unsteady. I tried to get him to move down my arm towards my hand for a treat but he wouldn't do it. We will keep working on it though. My poor mangled arm 😂
