Buying an african grey who is near to self-need GUIDELINES

Dear Members,
So the dilemma is....:-
I lost 3 of my baby parrots for apparently no reason. the first parrot's postmortem showed mycoplasma infection.
the second one died all of a sudden and the 3rd one died after being perfectly healthy 30 minutes before.

the ages of those parrots were:-
20 days and 25 days.

Now, i think i fed them the wrong way. the reason why i think this is as follows:-
  1. they may have aspirated.
  2. the consistency of food was not right. maybe it was too thin.

NOW I NEED YOUR ADVISE

I HAVE BEEN MISSING THOSE CREATURES SO MUCH that my family agrees to get me an african grey who is near to self.

i have heard people say that at this stage we can loose baby parrots, is this correct?

there are so many things being spoken.

please send me resources before i can get this new baby home. i dont want to experiment.

worried and concerned.
 
It has been a very sad experience for you.
My guess is that all the chicks had mycoplasma infection.

If you are going to buy a parrot please make sure it is fully weaned and eating on it's own, an African in my opinion, should be no less than 12 to 16 + weeks old before weaned.

I am sure other members will be along with advice.
 
Hello! I have been silently following your threads for a while and very sad for you with your baby birds!

I have two parrots and both were bought after they were weaned and eating alone. My African grey we got him at 5 and a half months old, i found loads of baby greys online for sale from 8 weeks old and the thought of having to wean/feed myself terrified me, i really wanted a baby bird after seeing loads of people having great bonds when they hand fed them but im so glad i waited for the right bird and i have had no issues what so ever with him. We have the best bond and he's still so little considering how long they live for, so for me the better option was to get a bird already weaned.

I am in no way telling you what to do im a new parrot owner, just wanted to throw in an age we got my baby grey but just wish you all the best with your new birds 😌

i also wanted a parrot that was self feeding and yes I am getting it from a different city this time.
There are so many things coming to my mind like was the food consistency okay? He I make the mistake of taking the food down it’s airway.... I shall not be able to take all this stress with another parrot.
Are African greys good companions and are they friendly with children?

You can still have the same problems in a different city, people see birds as income only and are sloppy on hygiene and care and the end is the birds suffer and possibly die. Check this breeder out. Is it clean, do the birds seem well cared for? If not keep looking until you find one that does consider the birds welfare. You can spend a lot of money and have a lot of heartache otherwise.

I don't have children so can't comment on how greys are with children, sure other members can help on that front.
My grey is wonderful, very friendly loves to cuddle and will go to anybody in my family for a cuddle. He is extremely smart and always on the go looking for new things to do. Out of his cage he loves to be challenged with toys or training and the times he is inside he destroys toys for fun and loves foraging toys. His mind always needs to be entertained which can be hard work.

I don't know if all greys are the same as mine, my boyfriends friend has a grey who won't be touched etc so i assume it depends on the bird and the time you spend together.

On the same lines my grey is only 8 months old, so i am expecting the unexpected for when he grows up and matures more.
 
Please keep in mind that once they hit maturity they could completely change and you may start with a cute cuddly bird who goes to anyone but end up with a bird who only likes on person and will attack anyone else, including the favourite person if they think they are in danger or don't like how close someone else is, or if they think you haven't given them enough attention. You could end up with a bird that does not want to cuddled or even touched and will only step up on their terms.

They can change a lot once they hit maturity.

I have heard this a lot, this is why we are enjoying the current time with him but completely expect anything when he hits maturity 😊

Agree with this, although Bo is 8 months old he is very head strong. One day he loves me more than anybody and the day after the will love my boyfriend and only sit on me if he has nobody else to perch on 😂

Found greys are very complex determined and stubborn birds haha! A few friends of mine say how cute he is and say that they want one and i discourage them. I love him and wouldn't change him for the world but accept these birds aren't for everybody😁
