I need a new carpet. Was worried about my cockatiels. . This particular carpet is 80%wool. Supposedly eco friendly. Will this affect my birds health.

I've never personally heard that this could present a problem, unless they'll be eating it ;). Things such as fragrances, cleaning chemicals etc... as it would affect the respiratory system, but I've not heard of actual furnishings being bad.

Thankyou for your reply. I looked up new carpets in your house on the internet and it said that new carpets, especially synthetic, can be toxic to birds, but didn’t know if any members had any issues with new carpets and birds. That’s why I was looking to buy a wool one as it’s supposed to be eco friendly. Thankyou again. 🐦🐦🐦

The adhesive that is used to stick new carpets to the floor can give off VOCs (fumes) for a while which can be toxic. They are the same fumes that paints for walls give off which can be harmful to parrots' respiratory systems. I would wait until the warmer weather when you can open the windows and air the room. It usually takes 1 - 2 days for them to subside. Can you keep the cockatiels in a separate room temporarily?

Thanks for your reply. I will ask the carpet fitters whether they need to use the glue or not due to my birds. I could put them i the bedroom and shut them off although it’s on the same floor and put an extractor fan on 24/7 with the windows on vent were the carpet is fitted. I will have to think very carefully. My birds are to precious to me.

When having new carpet laid with or with out glue being used it is best to keep the birds out of the room too allow and dust of the new fibers from the carpet to settle for a few days or until the smell of glue has disappeared for at least two days. Do not use the Extractor fan in the room that you place the birds in with out the window open as this will drew the smells ect. from the rooms out side. if you are having rugs cleaned by professional cleaners they have to be left away from the birds and allowed to air for up to a week preferably not in the home. using normal carpet cleaners, this can affect birds so you should house them away from any vapers until the carpet is fully dried and two days after any smell has gone keeping the room well aired during drying process.

Thankyou Michael for your good advice. Barney has been plucking her feathers and has gone backwards and is not eating enough. I have had to top up the feed with a syringe. I have put her back on her medication and will phone vet on Monday. She was doing so well it’s disappointing but I do my best. I will put carpets on hold until she is sorted. 🤪
