Are these normal?

Good morning everybody!

Just a quick one in relation to feathers, over the last couple of days i have noticed a number of these feathers in the picture all over Bo's cage. This morning there was about 10 on his cage floor, i always seem to find them on the bars and toys etc.
I see these feathers at the bottom of his back near his tail but i worry because of plucking and with the number on the floor this morning thought i would be safe to ask the question, they are super soft!

Could this be a sign of mauling? Bo is 6 months old now and his clipped feathers on his wing are getting longer so glad they're growing back through.

Thank you all in advance!

Thank you very much!

Is the dander the dust? I have noticed the side board at the back of the room next to his cage is dusty more often haha.
I open the windows every morning for fresh air for both lads and to clear the air, also mist Bo every other day with warm water and give him a good soak once a week, will up this when he gets more used to the water haha..

Thank you for your help though i appreciate it!

Yes dust/dander same thing. You should see what a Cockatoo is like!!!!
I don't know whether you have an air purifier but that helps keep it down in the atmosphere.

No we don't have an air purifier, will have a look and get one if it'll help!

I knew before Bo greys are dusty but never knew cockatoos are the same, or if not worse haha!

Air purifiers make a huge difference and are very good for protecting your health. Cleaning them out is an awful job but fortunately this doesn't need to be done all that often. I used to have three greys indoors and the dust was simply appalling!

I will definitely be getting one of the air purifiers.
Do you just leave them on all day and night or put them on at certain times, also will any do or would anyone recommend a certain brand??

I have a Bionaire one but there are many available I am sure members will be along with the ones they consider the best and how long they have them on for.
As I don't have parrots that create a lot of dander I do not have it on every day.

I had one that mysteriously sensed when it needed to come on and off. It was from Northern Parrots. I think it was marketed as an 'Intelligent Air Purifier'. It was expensive but lasted for many years.

Before i met and fell in love with Bo I was considering getting a too! But i went to see Bo and fell in love with his kind but crazy personality. I was surprised that even so young he was a character! I noticed when he tries to fly the dust that came off him when i first brought him home, since our mistings i haven't noticed much more but know it's there.

Will certainly get an air purifier! Had a look around when working last night and although a little pricey if they work and make all our home healthier they are worth the money! Thank you all for your suggestions.

I treat air purifier like any other electrical goods (including washing machine and dishwasher which are all potentially a fire risk even though the risk are small), I only have them on during the day and when I'm at home. I turn them off at night and when I'm out.

To control the dander/dust from the parrots overnight, I cover our cages with a duvet cover.

I can recommend Puremate PM510 or Heaven Fresh XJ-3800A Make sure that you turn off the Ironiser which can produce ozone which are not good for birds, the Heaven Fresh XJ-3800A ironiser produces next to nothing ozone so is safe to use

I wonder if an air purifier would help with the dust in our house!

Yes

You will notice a reduction in dust settling around your home, but you still will need to dust your home from time to time

On the note of ironisers, most air purifiers comes with one, so make sure that you get one that allows you to turn off the ironiser independently, most purifier won't allow you to, but there are some that will

Thank you so much!!

Your most welcome.

During the winter alongside our air purifier, I also use the Meaco Dehumidifier which also has a hepa filter, these can be either run as a dehumidifier or just a air filter or both.

They come in 12l or 20l
