Behaviour ?? (Multi thread)

Hope this is ok, as you may or may not know we have taken an CAG from a rescue, all seems fine.

I was wondering if I post some short videos could you possibly help me learn his body language and maybe some of his behaviour and what it means/what he wants ?

I know it’s only a guess but it may help us learn.

one thing he keeps doing and I know it means something but no idea what but we feel bad as it means something to him.

he kind of reaches up with his right leg and opens his wings a little, always while we’re taking to him or have music and he’s playing, link below to video

I would guess it was a learned behaviour from a previous home to show his excitement. Especially as he's doing it at a time which he associates with fun and happy things. One of our macaws waves when she seems to get over excited, the other lifts his foot up and lowers his head (sometimes nodding) when we're talking to him on some occasions. Well done for rescuing him by the way! He looks like a beautiful little guy :see_hearts:

Thank you, I assumed it was some learned behaviour I just wish we new what he was asking for, we’ve also got some others like below.

Some almost looks like he’s asking to step up but we’ve been told and seen (when removed from travel cage) him try to bite/nip hands when near him, he doesn’t do it through cage bars, he’s very calm about hands next to his cage.

he has 3 perches one far left, one top centre at the back and one mid right which is right next to my chair, he sits on this 6-12 inches from me constantly.

but the one below he does when we are approach the front of his cage.

Also the head bobbing with ruffled feathers again I assume playing but the feather thing ????

Just to say that when you ask a bird to step up, I hold a finger out and say up, and they use the beak to hold and steady themselves, so a bite is not necessarily on its way. Most parrots do use their beak first to steady your finger to step onto. If it turns into a real bite a stern No should be said, they do get used to the tone of your voice .

It is very early days so slowly does it let him get used to you and your ways, and don't go making any sudden movements . I am sure others will be along with advice.

The bobbing about he's doing again looks like excitement. He obviously wants to interact so I guess it's a case of building up the trust between you. Aggression is also shown in feather ruffling but tends to go along with slower movements and head lowered. Learning an individual birds body language comes with time, as although they're are general clues, the bird picks up other things over the years. You will have to go through a few bites getting to know your little lad!

its a good sign that he likes the attention and interaction, if he bowes his head down he may want a scratch, but be a little carful as some birds may become a little scared at first and may try to bite so you need to stay alert and quick on the retreat Ha Ha

Thank you micheal, yes I’ve been looking for a head scratch but he’s having none of it, not even head dip

So another new one last night and tonight, covered him last night as normal and he went down the bottom, milled around for a bit ripped up some paper (which he’s never done before) and seemed to go back to his sleeping perch 5 or so minutes later.

Today he’s been in a real bratty mood, ripping his paper up, not happy about anything, snatching treats and throwing veg.

Tonight when I covered him he went down the bottom, ( I peaked through a hole in his blanket) ripped some paper, stared scratching at the floor (but like a chicken) and done a big ruffles up feather thing, like a dance, then went back up.

Hormonal/nesting Behavior maybe ?

Sounds like it, doesn't it... Greys seem to go down to the bottom, scratch and tear the paper. They are partial ground feeders which is probably why.

Hard to see as I couldn’t get the camera far enough away, but got plenty of scratchy time and then what I assume is mating.

wings kind of half open and downwards, the end you can hear a lapping/clicking noise.

excuse my stupid voice

Greys can show affection this is how they get on in a flock, they make there friends and form a bond of trust. if you reply in the same way you will be acting like another male will. do not be surprised if he try's to regurgitate food on you he is only returning the favor as a show of appreciation. well when you think of your own actions you are giving him food and helping him. what you do not let him do is mount your finger or hand rubbing him self on you, to discourage this twist your wrist to make him concentrate on balance, never stroke all the way down his back,

Thank you, I understand

Sorry to keep on, prob just being paranoid but when he’s out in his cage a few feet behind me, everyone I look away he does this, to be honest its Making me a little nervous (no idea why) it’s really hard to catch as soon as I look at him he stops.

this little vid is quite placid, usually it’s more visual
naughty or nice ?
