Hello everyone, recently I went to buy a new cockatiel. Sadly someone else had already bought it... Eventually the owner knew someone who has a huge collection of parrots like cockatiels and many baby cockatiels. So later this month I will go to his house again and pick my new cockatiel. They are really young now and I'm not the most experienced person with babies. They are all pretty friendly and hand tamed. Anything I should be aware of? IMG-bcad275a07360d9c303637dbed9d188a-V.jpg

I will say please make sure it it properly weaned and eating on it's own. Too many breeders let birds go when they still need hand feeding. If you are able to go to the breeders and be amongst the chicks, let one of them chose you not you chose the bird.

I second that.

Do not buy a bird that still requires hand feeding or is still being fed by the parents.

Also second letting the bird choose you. If you can then just spend time letting them come to you on their own terms and let them explore your hands and arms. You will know which the right bird is :)

Then please make sure you get them checked over by an avian vet and have basic blood work done. Psittacosis and pbfd are always a must when I get a new bird.

If you have other animals then please quarantine the new one away from them.

Thanks everyone, he is an expert on parrots and has everything... Cockatoo, African Grey, Amazons and all smaller parrots all tamed and no wing clipping at all...he is an expert. I will make sure the bird is checked and of course I will take the bird when it will be able to eat on it's own.I will pick the one which picks me first for sure

I'm confused are you buying the bird from the same person you were going to get the other bird from?

Will you be buying directly from the breeder themself or are they going to be bringing some birds to someone else's house for you to pick from?

Yes hun that is as maybe BUT remember they are also a business, intending to make money and will often put this before welfare of the poor baby bird. It is in your interests to wait until the right time, please?

No he has never sold any other bird. He asked the pet shop owner who I was going to buy the cockatiel from if anyone is interested in cockatiels because he got 9 babies. All the birds he has are for him and he treats them really well, it is not business (Since the cockatiels are too young the pet shop owner doesn't want them because he doesn't know how to take care of them if anyone is wondering. So that's why I will be waiting a bit)

No, the pet shop owner told me that someone is interested in giving 1 or 2 baby cockatiels because he has too many of them. It is not a business, it is the first time he is giving a bird.

Yes I will go to the person's house to sit and talk about the birds and generally chat... I will for sure have a look around the environment and his equipment. Since I went there one time he treats every parrot really well, clear cages, room, food, water and there is a big variety of toys and snacks for the birds. Most of them spend time outside the cage because they are perfectly tamed and really friendly... Many of them even live in outside cages. It is not business and he doesn't have all those birds to sell them.

gianos you have been given useful pieces of advise...a fully weaned bird which feels comfortable with you is the direction...
check the aviary/also talk to the breeder and get his philosophy/way of thinking and examine how his birds are treated...there are some standards we all parrot companions meet... we feed them lots of things we clean them and we adore them :) and we do not clip their wings....
