Hi all
I would like to know which type of food is best for budgie or which budgie food to buy

Something that has plenty of vitamins, helps the bird to grow healthy have good feathers and the colours of the feathers to be vibrant
Basically to be at optimum health

My dad only feeds his budgies millets on the stick /stem
I guess it's cheap and cheerful !

My budgie is staying in my bedroom and hopefully will have alot of access to free flying in my room

I want to feed my budgie premium good quality food and don't have to worry about to much fat in it etc

Most importantly want him to always stay healthy and for his colours and feathers to always look top notch.

And for treats .. what do you recommend to give and how often

1 of my dad's old budgie who recently died he loved lettuce, as soon as he would see green in your hand he would go crazy , let me out ,let me out he would jump about and just eat a whole price of lettuce and would not share it

Thanks guys

My budgies have a budgie specific seed mix which has lots of different types of millet in it plus they get access daily to fresh fruit and veggies and I go out and get them dandelions (during the summer), a plant called shepherds purse and chickweed. they get access to different types of grass with seeds on it that I hang up in bunches …. what else … oh yeah they like to have a go at fresh willow leaf on the stalk and apple leaf on twigs.
They have iodine blocks as budgies suffer really badly from iodine deficiency they cost about 50p from the pet shop and last for ever! They also have access to cuttlefish.

The seed I use for the budgies is Johnston and Jeff Expert Budgie I think its called.

I use bucktons budgie tonic for mine.

I like to sprout it for them as well.

They get various fresh veg. Fruit is given as a treat. I always givr them millet sprays.

As mention iodine block and cuttlefish is available at all times. I also offer clay blocks.

I keep guardian Angel and add it to their water to give them a boost during moulting.

I've placed an order for this food
Seems local pet stores and pets 4 u don't stock this particular one

This seems to have alot of good reviews
The other food the person mentioned a few shop sites said it's for using sparringley so I didn't look at it

But thanks guys

Good your sorted with the seed but don't forget to feed the other things mentioned fruit and veggies, iodine block and cuttle fish are all important too

What fruit and veg do budgie prefer ?
How often would you feed fruit and veg ?

My dad's budgie loved lettuce but got told not to give it every day , just once a week!

Cuttle fish is ordered, iodine block I'll have to by from pets 4 u
The place I ordered the budgie food didn't seem to sell iodine blocks they had something else which as per description seemed to do the same thing but there was no mention of the word iodine so I didn't bother
There's was white
And from all the iodine pics I've seen , it's pink
Any particular one I should get ?? Or all iodine blocks the same ?

theirs was probably a termed a mineral block all iodine blocks the same and should cost around 50p you only need one for your bird (and one for your dads budgies too!) it'll last for flipping ever they nibble when they need.
each birdie has their own favourites when it comes to fruit and veggies so its a case of trying stuff out until you hit the spot for favourites but remember too much of a good thing is just as bad as too little and just because they don't try it the first time is no reason to not keep offering things.
My lot do so love things like curly kale, broccoli (plant of the devil!! I hate that stuff but buy and feed it to my flock as its good for them and they love it)
Here's the lists of parrot safe foods

This is the list of things to NOT feed

Thank you for this
It's a great help.

I did see a list of food for parrots in the forum but it said parrot so didn't think it applied to budgies.

Budgies are the stars of the parrot world. mine love fresh grass stems with the seed on them and dandelion leaves but only pick it from places that have not been contaminated buy cars or pester sides.

Hi,

i realise this thread is a few months old now but thought i would post regarding what to feed budgies.

My two have quite a good varied diet,

They have their cuttlefish and iodine block in , fresh water everyday, also fresh veg each morning. This normally consists of Parsley which i hang, broccoli and romaine lettuce , spinach , sweet corn and cauliflower leaves , i swap between these each day. They have millet , not everyday though , seed sticks for a treat, i also get a seed grass bag from the pet shop which they love. For their seed in their pots they have tonic seed or conditioning seed in one pot but not everyday and two other pots with Versele-Laga prestige budgie mix which they love .I also buy a box of Vitakraft fruit cocktail which i mix in with their bird seed a couple of times a week because they have never been keen on fresh fruit.

Hope this helps .

if you are giving a good diet then I advice stopping the vitakraft. to much vitamins can be just as harmful so my advice is omly give extra vitamin products with avian vet approval

Hi Michael,

if i don't need to give them the Vitakraft fruit mix that is great , i was only giving them it because they won't eat fresh fruit so i was using it as an alternative . I was worried that having no fruit will be bad for them or do you have any suggestions what i can do for the lack of fruit in their diet?

This is the one, they only have it twice a week and a sprinkle :)

budgies are not great fruit eaters but I would leave a slice of apple through there cage, have you tried fresh grass and dandelion leaves only picked from away from traffic or places that may het sprayed with weed killer. free a good food to give them

i have tried grasses but not dandelion leaves , i was a bit worried i may upset their little stomachs , i know you shouldn't give them too much anyway.
Where i live is surrounded by fields so easy to get away from the roads , there are some woodland walks which would be a good place to pick some. I will give it a try, thanks . I have tried apple over and over but they just don't bother. I tried putting some in each day for a few weeks because i know they can take a while to try something when it is new in the cage , they just stare at it :D but they never touched it, i tried grapes , banana , blueberries .

I agree with Michael - budgies are very underrated by people that do not know them. Try searching for them on YouTube. They are incredibly tough birds. When they stand still long enough for you to study their colours, their plumage is beautiful and they have personalities that far exceeds their size.

Our four lads have the Tidymix budgie diet, then a fine chop of fruit & veg. It varies but today it was:

Pear
Apple
Carrot
Rocket
Fine beans
Sugarsnap (or mangetout)
Kale (regular or black)
Red pepper
Baby sweet corn
Fresh peas

Dark greens are excellent - full of vits & mins. Broccoli heads go down very well. Carrots leaves are good too if you can find them. Suspended from the roof of the cage, budgies love to swing on them and destroy them.

We add par-boiled & mashed sweet potato & butternut and a chopped mix of boiled beans & pulses. All of our birds love it.

Dandelions are in season. Use them before they go to seed. The leaves are good and my wife fights the birds for the petals - she makes a "tea" out of them (but she's weird ;))

Yes i agree , i have had my two over a year now and they have lovely personalities . They love their veg , i hang their parsley form the top of the cage and they climb on it, swing and all sorts . They like carrot leaves , kale and sweet potato, sweet corn i have tried but not bothered with and i do try to persevere. I get a lot of tips and advice from a lady i know who keeps budgies in her aviary and has done for years so quite handy really.
They are not keen on fruit though like i have mentioned in my previous post

I am going to deffo try the dandelions :)

I have four tiels myself living with me and own another eight that are companion birds. tonight I have not got a budgie living with me although I own more budgies than any other species. when it come to millet and even the seeds have you ever tried sprouting them the new shoots are a favorite for many of my flock. I always leave a patch in my garden for grasses to grow and seed, yet again a great favorite, budgies and cockatiels rely on grass seed in the wild as their main source off food, so much more healthy than the dry seed. I try to use as much as I can from the safe foods from the farm I live on for most of my flock, I know no chemicals or pester sides have been used on the farm,
